Résumé:
In this illustrated volume, Andrew Higgott demonstrates how architectural books and journals have created twentieth century architectural culture in Britain. Mediating Modernism discusses the publications, language and images which, in the act of 'describing', 'interpreting' or 'illustrating' the architecture, have created it in architectural discourse. Whilst numerous recent books have radically re-thought the construct of modernism, this is the first book to re-think modernism in relation to British architecture.

Résumé:
In the winter of 1974, filmmaker Werner Herzog made a three week solo journey from Munich to Paris on foot. He believed it was the only way his close friend, film historian Lotte Eisner, would survive a horrible sickness that had overtaken her. During this monumental odyssey through a seemingly endless blizzard, Herzog documented everything he saw and felt with intense sincerity. This diary is dotted with a pastiche of rants about the extreme cold and utter loneliness, notes on Herzog's films and travels, poetic descriptions of the snowy countryside, and personal philosophizing. What is most remarkable is that the reading of the book is in continuity with the experience of watching his films; it's as if, through this walk, we witness the process in which images are born. Although he received a literary award for it, this introspective masterpiece has lingered out of print since 1979. Beautifully designed and emotionally impressive, Of Walking in Ice is the first in a color-coded series of remarkable yet long-forgotten titles being republished by Free Association.

Résumé:
Over the years Marianne Mueller has accumulated an archive of photographs taken both at home and on extended journeys. Completely nonhierarchical, the pictures capture whatever strikes the artist’s fancy. In STAIRS ETC, her archive has supplied the copious images of the designed and built world around us. Laid out in double-page blocks and organized by the simplest of categories (from chairs and tables to fountains and pools), the photographs emulate a pseudo-encyclopedic overview of ordinary objects captured with eloquent nonchalance and a discriminating eye for what we tend to write off as irrelevant and insignificant. Mueller invites us on a journey as absurdly comical as it is poetic, where we find ourselves meandering through the miracles and madness of a universe that is chock-full of things.

Résumé:
In the south of Iceland is Landbrot, a place closer to fairy tales than to science-- indeed, a place easy to imagine as the singular source of fairies and elves worldwide. It is easy, too, to imagine the sensual comfort and satisfaction to be found there. "Mother, wonder" is the eleventh book in Roni Horn’s (born 1955) ongoing series "To Place," which she initiated in 1989 and exists only in book form. All the volumes focus on Iceland and the evolving experiences of the artist there; together they form a flowing dialogue addressing the relationship between identity and place. The titles to date in the coveted "To Place" encyclopedia are "Bluff Life" (1990), "Folds" (1991), "Lava" (1992), "Pooling Waters" (1994), "Verne’s Journey" (1995), "Haraldsdóttir" (1996), "Arctic Circles" (1998), "Becoming a Landscape" (2001), "Doubt Box" (2006) and "Haraldsdóttir, Part Two" (2011).

''Everyone has a story about the weather. This may be the single thing each of us holds in common. And though the weather varies greatly from here to there, it is, ultimately, one weather that we share. Small talk everywhere has occasioned the popular distribution of the weather. Some say talking about the weather is talking about oneself. And with each passing day, the weather increasingly becomes ours, if not us. 'Weather reports you' is one beginning of a collective self-portrait,'' writes Roni Horn, ''a metaphor for the physical, metaphysical, political, social and moral energy of a person and a place''. This book is a new edition of the original ''Weather reports you'' of 2007, a gathering of oral reports on the weather made on location in Iceland, accompanied by snapshots taken at the time and place of each interview.

Résumé:
''Real estate opportunities'' continues Japanese photographer Takashi Homma’s homage series to the influential American artist Ed Ruscha, following similar photobooks by Homma such as ''Every building on the Ginza street,'' ''Royal road test,'' ''Babycakes,'' and ''Twenty-six gasoline stations.'' Ruscha’s original ''Real estate opportunities'' series was published in 1970 and featured photographs of empty building lots for sale in Los Angeles. For his tribute, Homma (together with series collaborators Yoshihisa Tanaka and Yusuke Nakajima) photographed empty lots in and around Tokyo. Its design and size carefully replicating Ruscha’s original, Homma’s photobook possesses a charm of its own as it captures the strange optimism and sense of possibility of these negative spaces within Tokyo’s dense architectural sprawl.

Résumé:
Part of the Chapters series developed by the Belgian architects 51N4E, this third instalment tells the story of two office towers from the 1970s that have been transformed according to the principles of reduce/reuse/recycle. Against all odds, the former World Trade Centre in Brussels is being repurposed in a previously unimaginable way. After many years of vacancy, the building now represents a new approach to urban development and a showcase for dealing in a more sustainable way with older buildings threatened with demolition. And although the adaptive reuse of this building is unique, the underlying concepts and processes are not – a lesson on how not to demolish a building.
