Par-delà même ces réussites incomparables, Fornasetti fut une personnalité versatile, à la tête d'une œuvre multiforme, embrassant aussi bien l'art graphique que la verrerie, la porcelaine que le tissu, la gravure que le théâtre, le mobilier que la peinture. Travailleur acharné, il poursuivit souverainement, entre 1935 et 1988, une recherche obstinée, se créant une mythologie personnelle, un monde imaginaire dont il ne cessa, un peu comme Jean Cocteau, de varier les éléments. C'est à ce monde totalement méconnu qu'ouvre le présent ouvrage. Conçu en collaboration avec l'artiste peu avant sa disparition, il embrasse en une série d'étonnants documents et de superbes illustrations tous les aspects d'une œuvre aussi prolifique que méconnue.
