Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) was concerned with every detail of the environments he designed, from the basic structure right down to the door handles. When he designed St Catherine's College for Oxford University in 1960, even the height of the cedar trees he planted and the varieties of fish he installed in the ponds were of urgent concern; there was no place, in Jacobsen's(...)

Résumé:
Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) was concerned with every detail of the environments he designed, from the basic structure right down to the door handles. When he designed St Catherine's College for Oxford University in 1960, even the height of the cedar trees he planted and the varieties of fish he installed in the ponds were of urgent concern; there was no place, in Jacobsen's thinking, where architecture left off and design took over, and today he is equally famed for his achievements in both domains. In the realm of furniture design, such creations as the Egg, Series 7, Ant and Swan chairs have become icons of Danish design.

Hans Wegner’s sophisticated chair designs, paragons of the midcentury-modern style, are beloved and imitated the world over, but scant few are familiar with his masterly watercolors. Wegner often used the medium to finish and finalize the drawings made in his workshop. Although woodworking and watercolor were both increasingly considered traditional in the New Media Age, Wegner’s artistic temperament saw him use both these mediums to boundary-breaking effect in his search for the perfect chair. "Watercolors by Hans J. Wegner" showcases his watercolors in thematic chapters, delving into the artistic dimensions of his design studio. Beyond illustrations of some of his notable chair models, the featured watercolors also highlight his lighting fixtures and complete room designs. They are interpreted by Anne Blond, director of the future Wegner Museum in Denmark and author of Wegner’s biography on the centennial anniversary of his birth in 2014.

Anna Andreeva (1917–2008) was a Soviet textile designer and leading artist at the famous Red Rose Silk Factory in Moscow from 1944 to 1984. The former Giraud silk factory, nationalized in 1919 after the October Revolution and renamed to commemorate the murdered Polish-German socialist revolutionary Rosa Luxemburg, became a site of collective female design labor that shaped the fashion and material culture of late socialism. Andreeva’s spectacular patterns range from abstract and geometric to cosmic and space-age and to pictorial themes of the city of Moscow and Russian folk art. Her mass-produced designs were among the most popular textile prints distributed within the USSR in the 1960s and 1970s.

Résumé:
''Peter Shire’s Grand Tour: A Snapshot of Design History, 1980–1989'', edited by Christoph Radl, is a deeply personal photo diary chronicling the decade of Memphis—‘the last design revolution’, headed by maestro Ettore Sottsass, the leaning tower of Italian design. Peter didn’t know it at the time, but his snapshots of Italy in the ‘80s (with a sidequest to Vienna) were the serendipitous beginning, middle, and end of something big. ''Peter Shire’s Grand Tour'' pairs candid pictures with personal interludes to trace the heady, unpolished brilliance of a movement before it knew what it was. With the unwitting eye of a tourist-turned-historian, Peter’s camera captured it all—from Caravaggio at the Uffizi to storefronts of women’s lingerie shops and beautiful sunsets, alongside rogue selfies and a cast of Memphis Group legends including Ettore Sottsass, Alessandro Mendini, and Matteo Thun.

Résumé:
"William Morris: Pattern & design" begins with an introductory overview of Morris’s life and work. It explores how these iconic designs were created and printed in the late nineteenth century, and then shows the patterns, and many alternative colorways. The decade of each pattern is specified on each spread, and the vertical captions give as much uninterrupted space to the patterns as possible. This generously illustrated book showcases iconic designs including the famous Trellis, St. James's, and StrawberryThief, alongside lesser known, but equally fascinating patterns by Morris and Morris & Co. designers such as May Morris, Kate Faulkner, and John Henry Dearle.
