Résumé:
This publication studies methods for creating flexible looks for public and cultural institutions. The classic logos normally used by companies are the result of a unique process of compression and abstraction. By contrast, flexible looks do not conceal their diverse components of identity in a logo, forming instead a complex family of symbols from them. In the combination of a basic logo and a family of symbols, the look is in a position to represent the fundamentals (the philosophy of the institution, its program) and the specifics (e.g., temporary exhibitions and events). The author describes the effect and potential of looks and offers the criteria that distinguish fully developed, dynamic looks. Case studies of famous designers such as Karl Gerstner and Ruedi Baur enhance the analysis.

Résumé:
This book examines Dutch commemorative coins which will continue to be minted, despite the introduction of the Euro. In a lyrical article, Gert Staal explores the sentimental and symbolical significance of coins. The results of a workshop ‘Design by the mm3’, in which eleven artist/designers took part, is discussed in an article by Lilet Breddels and presented in numerous illustrations. Gerard Unger subverts his own specialization in typography by arguing that artists are perfectly capable of creating their own lettering for coin designs. Hans Jacobi, keeper of the Koninklijke Penningen Kabinet (Royal Coins Cabinet) in Leiden, throws light on the vicissitudes of Dutch coin design during the last twenty years. In an epilogue, Janwillem Schrofer, a member of the Advisory Commission for New Coinage and the president of the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam, presents his outlook on the importance of good coin design.

This volume documents MVRDV`s project for the competition for the Musee des Arts et Civilisations in Paris, and includes all aspects of the design: visual as well as written. This book asks such urgent design questions as the meaning of a museum for non-Western art at a time when worldwide mobility is making the ideas of "Western" and "non-Western" meaningless. How does one represent authenticity in this context? Designed by MVRDV, this book allows the reader inside the design process to the original ideas conceived and problems faced by an architect.

Résumé:
This publication is based on the principle that the most innovative design ideas are probably not the ones passing through patent offices. Functioning as a visual dictionary of everyday ingenuity and self-sufficiency, and spanning Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, it catalogues inspiring examples of the creative repurposing of detritus, and of overlooked land, by ordinary people — whether for reasons of subsistence, politics or sheer artistry. Thus, a flowerpot and a section of a fence become an improvised barbeque; a tree stump on a sidewalk is carved into a makeshift one-seater. The innovations are classified as either "objects" or "actions," demonstrating a decentralized but palpable European movement conscious of avoiding waste. The book features an essay by the artist and designer Daniele Pario Perra, who in 2001 began the Design on the Cheap database.

Outils de travail de nos grands-parents, ils se chinent aujourd'hui dans le grenier de notre mémoire collective et s'installent dans notre quotidien pour ce qu'ils sont : de nouveaux meubles de famille.
