Résumé:
"Designing small parks: a manual for addressing social and ecological concerns" provides guidelines for building better parks by integrating design criteria with current social and natural science research. Small parks are too often relegated to being the step-child of municipal and metropolitan open space systems because of assumptions that their small size and isolation limits their recreational capacity and makes them ecologically less valuable than large city and county parks. This manual is arranged around twelve topics that represent key questions, contradictions, or tensions in the design of small parks. Topics cover fundamental issues for urban parks, natural systems, and human aspects. Also included are useful case studies with alternative design solutions using three different approaches for integrating research findings into small urban park design.

Résumé:
All but forgotten today, eight historic gardens that once flourished along the length of the Thames in early Tudor London are here historically recreated and analyzed in this richly illustrated book. One of the gardens belonged to Sir Thomas More, and the others to politically powerful friends and acquaintances of his. The stories of these long-lost gardens, brought together here for the first time, shed new light not only on London’s garden history and that of its first gardeners but also on the lives and outlooks of some of the most important figures within and around the court of Henry VIII. The locations of these gardens range from the Tower of London to More’s own country manor at Chelsea, from Cardinal Wolsey’s York Place in Westminster (later transformed into Whitehall Palace by Henry VIII) to Hampton Court. More than any single garden could, the group of eight riverside gardens illuminates not only the practical realities but also the political importance of gardens. The book explores in detail the gardens that More knew so well and shows how their histories are intimately connected to his own.

Résumé:
For over a century, "Country Life" magazine has been influential in the world of garden design. Since 1897, its superbly illustrated essays on houses and gardens sought to inform and educate taste. Drawing from the unrivalled photographic archives of "Country Life", this magnificent volume charts the challenges, changes, and surprises of English garden design throughout the last century. The story begins with Arts and Crafts gardens, typified by herbaceous borders and modern planting, and it continues with the Edwardian debate between formality and "wild" gardening, inter-war grandeur, postwar practicality, and pioneering artists' gardens. Beautifully illustrated with 200 colour and duotone photographs, this is an illuminating survey of an outstanding century of British garden-making.

Nulle part, dira-t-on.

“Landscape Architecture and Town Planning in The Netherlands 01-03” offers a critical survey of current landscape architectonic and urban planning projects, and enables professional colleagues, clients and other interested parties to keep abreast of the 'state of the art' in landscape architecture and town planning in The Netherlands. The 2001-2003 edition is the fifth in a series of biannual publications. A commission under the leadership of Tineke Blok, comprised of Ruud Brouwers, Ton Hartman, Sylvia Karres, Martin Knuijt and Frits Palmboom, selected over 40 projects which are exemplary in one manner or another. Important themes this time are reconstruction of centres, neighbourhoods and parks, and what is being called the 'new collectivity' in town expansions and city centre projects. A number of analytic essays and opinion pieces by Ivan Nio, Rudi van Ettinger and Frans de Josselin de Jong, among others, precede the selection. The selection is accompanied by a commentary by Ruud Brouwers. Peter Paul Witsen wrote the project descriptions.

Résumé:
The creation of park systems is a historically proven method for communities to stabilize and cultivate healthy ecological habitats in country dwellings as well as in dense urban areas. Park systems ensure clean soil, water, and air for all. Moreover, they offer intergenerational and inclusive recreational opportunities along ecological corridors. Between 1900 and 1950, civic design—a practice in urban and landscape planning explicitly oriented towards the common good—experienced a heyday. Park systems were successfully used as “green armatures” hosting public facilities such as playgrounds, schools, administrative buildings, hospitals, and gardens. ''Living Cities'' offers a chronological survey of civic design based on more than 30 park systems on five continents. The examples range from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Park an der Ilm in Weimar (1778) and John Nash’s Regent Street in London (1806) to Chicago’s park system (1850), Albert Bodmer and Maurice Braillard’s plans for Geneva (1936), and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin Valley (1947), as well as to contemporary and future projects in Addis Ababa, Madrid, Medellín, New York, and Seoul. Matthew Skjonsberg’s book demonstrates the ecological and social impact of park systems and highlights the diverse challenges that communities face when implementing such projects. At the same time, it encourages a reevaluation of civic design as an intergenerational practice for creating human settlements.
