"Massive Change" is a modern illustrated primer on the new inventions, technologies, and events that are affecting the human race worldwide. The book is a part of a broader research project by Bruce Mau Design intended to provoke debate and discussion about the future of design culture, broadly defined as the “familiar objects and techniques that are transforming our lives.” In essays, interviews, and provocative imagery aimed at a broad audience, "Massive Change" explores the changing force of design in the contemporary world, and in doing so expands the definition of design to include the built environment, transportation technologies, revolutionary materials, energy and information systems, and living organisms. The book is divided into 11 heavily illustrated sections covering major areas of change in contemporary society — such as urbanism and architecture, the military, health and living, and wealth and politics. Each section intersperses intriguing documentary images with a general introductory essay, extended captions, and interviews with leading thinkers, including engineers, designers, philosophers, scientists, architects, artists, and writers. Bram de Does is among the most important contemporary typographers in the Netherlands. He was the chief typographic designer for the famous Dutch printers Enschedé having started work there in 1958. His typefaces Trinité‚ and Lexicon have become two of the most widely used in the Netherlands and he won the prestigious H.N.Werkman prize in 1991 for the design of the Trinité‚. His bibliophile publications, many of which he sets and prints himself in his own workshop 'Spectatorpers', quickly become collectors items. This publication is the first major study of his entire oeuvre and contains the commentary of several other designers on the practical use of the Trinité and the Lexicon. This 'image book' presents a themed overview of the work of the graphic designer Piet Gerards. Fifty works chosen and provided with a commentary by Gerards himself show how playful perfectionism and ironic aestheticization have come to typify his iconoclastic style of designing. A recalcitrant commitment and an interest in art history set Piet Gerards on the trail of modernism and the historical avant-garde at an early stage. Experimenting in that spirit, he developed during the course of three decades a wholly individual approach that strikes a balance between aesthetic ideals and usefulness. Ben van Melick describes and interprets Piet Gerards's development step by step: from self-taught man and left-wing activist specializing in posters and pamphlets to publisher and premiated maker of books, organizer of special cultural productions and graphic designer of many facets. The Austrian typographer and graphic designer Helmut Schmid (1942–2018) was acknowledged globally as a master of his craft. Schmid put his own spin on Emil Ruder's teachings while remaining faithful to his principles of clarity, simplicity and elegance. Living in Osaka, Vancouver and Germany (where he worked for the German Social Democratic Party and the German chancellors Willy Brandt and Helmut Schmidt), Schmid merged Eastern and Western influences in his editorial design, product packaging, political and corporate visual identity. En 1976, lorsque la SNCF lui commande le dessin de la carte voyageurs, c’est une première pour le designer suisse Rudi Meyer qui n’a jusque-là jamais dessiné de plans de réseaux ferrés. Des logos, des affiches, des caractères typographiques, du mobilier, des scénographies d’exposition, des montres, des dispositifs de projection vidéo, oui. Mais des cartes ? Aucune encore. Il dut, pour relever ce défi, inventer quelques outils au passage. Sa capacité à décloisonner a fait de lui un inclassable et donc un marginal au sein du cadastre des champs disciplinaires, plutôt imperméables et hiérarchisés en France. On en est parfois venu à ne plus savoir exactement quel était son métier. Qu’à cela ne tienne. Ne prenant racine dans aucun pré carré spécialisé, il multiplia les incartades, les rencontres, les collaborations et autres fertilisations croisées, sans jamais se sédentariser ni s’attacher.
