Résumé:
This fully-illustrated guide to Shropshire treats each city, town, and village in a detailed gazetteer and includes a variety of helpful maps, plans, and indexes along with an illustrated glossary. The book is an invaluable reference work on the appealing and unspoiled county of Shropshire, where many historic towns, including Shrewsbury and Ludlow, are especially plentiful in Georgian and timber-framed buildings. Shropshire boasts the Cistercian abbey of Buildwas and many important country houses, including the 13th-century fortified mansions at Acton Burnell and Stokesay; John Nash's Italianate villa at Cronkhill; and Norman Shaw's splendid Late Victorian mansion at Adcote. Shropshire is also home to numerous prehistoric hill-forts and the Roman town at Wroxeter as well as Coalbrookdale’s spectacular bridge, the first in the world to be built of iron.

Résumé:
At its founding, Boston was a small peninsula; over the last 375 years the city has doubled in size by filling in the surrounding tidal flats -areas covered with water at high tide and exposed at low. In "Walking tours of Boston's made land", historian Nancy Seasholes outlines twelve walks that trace where and why Boston's man-made land was created, and, along the way, uncovers fascinating and little-known pieces of Boston history. In the course of these walks - around the central waterfront, Back Bay, Beacon Hill, the South End, Charlestown, and elsewhere - she shows us how Boston's past is always just below the surface of its present. Each walk is accompanied by a map that shows the route and original shoreline. The walks are illustrated with historical maps, historical photographs and views, and current photographs. All walks are accessible by public transportation.

Résumé:
Massive changes in household structures and a conscious demand for ecologically built housing have led to radical changes in the housing field. No longer can the classical family automatically be taken as the basis for urban housing concepts. Flexible designs based on ecological principles and an emphasis on outdoor space are now in demand. Thus architects are being called upon, just as it was in the 20s, to deliver new concepts. This volume presents the buildings with their underlying concepts of a number of architects who have done just that. It serves both as a source of inspiration and a reference work for all those involved in housing. The Department of Housing and the Economics of Housing at the Technical University, Munich intends to publish a new volume covering the latest housing projects every two years.

Résumé:
"Into Stoas" is not a guidebook. It’s a mapping of Athens's neglected passageways – paths that connect streets and offer escape from the city’s stress and noise. It is an ode to a lost city of mixed use and to its diverse vernacular signs that still survive today. A call for presence at the “Commercial Triangle” of Athens, once a labyrinth ideal for inquisitive strolls, now undergoing blandification. An invitation to lose yourself in a city within a city, and keep these paths alive. This research project has a dual objective. To promote walking by revealing an alternative walking network in the heart of Athens and to document the images of the vernacular exit signs that constitute a part of the unarchived Greek design history. This second edition reflects on the transformation that has happened at the ''Commercial Triangle'' the last 12 years.

Résumé:
Rome is not only enriched by the works that have led it to be known as the "eternal city", or with those monuments that still preserve the stories of a strong people, such as the Colosseum, the Roman Forum or Castel Sant'Angelo. It is not only the symbolic center of Christianity thanks to St. Peter's Basilica, or the central and figurative hub of the Italian Republic because of the Palazzo del Quirinale. The history, art, and culture of Rome tell the story of a process of restoration and innovation that sees the participation of some timeless places and the birth of other contemporary community services that join those already known to the public. During 1930s, the social and cultural revolution and call for functionality and practicality are represented by impressive modern public and residential works, as well as by major operations from architectural protagonists in the urban change of the capital. Works such as the university city of Sapienza and its institutes, or the EUR district tell the story of the formal transition between modernity and contemporaneity.

Résumé:
The works of contemporary and established architecture, collected in five different itineraries within the volume, highlight the presence of a multitude of fragments and elements that make up the stratigraphy of the city. Venice turns out to be a laboratory for reflection on modernity to which it is necessary to turn our gaze in order to understand the complex uniqueness of a lagoon city that develops on an island. This presents itself as the city of the mind and people in that it consists entirely of pedestrian and public spaces but at the same time is traversed by water in which motor vehicles navigate. The unrepeatability of Venice makes its infinite architecture even more unprecedented and unique, giving those who visit it an unprecedented experience.
