Résumé:
A design classic is an industrially manufactured object with timeless aesthetic value. It serves as a standard of its kind and, despite the year in which it was designed, is still up to date. The collection presented in these three volumes has been put together by a group of experts following the above criteria. The objects are presented chronologically, beginning with an elegant pair of Chinese bonsai scissors from the early 1600s, still in production today, and ending with Jasper Morrison`s recent brunch set, which is destined to become a classic. The book includes not only classic objects created by internationally renowned designers, such as Breuer, Le Corbusier, Dreyfuss, Eames, Yanagi and Castiglioni, to name but a few, but also anonymously designed pieces, such as the clothes peg, the deck chair, the corkscrew and the chopstick, which, in spite of lacking a specific designer, have achieved such perfection in design and functionality that they have eliminated the possibility of improvement. Each product is presented on two, four or six pages and accompanied by a text. The texts provide a historical context, with information about the development of the design, and an explanation as to why that particular design is important. The texts also uncover curious anecdotes about the design, and the process involved in creating it. In many cases the products are described with details that have not been published before, informing the reader about materials and process, in addition to providing insights into each designer's oeuvre.

Résumé:
The Wiener Werkstätte, founded in Vienna in 1903 by Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, became the international trademark for art as well as arts-and-crafts in the twentieth century. The history of the Wiener Werkstätte is told in this volume, which features historic photographs (some of them published for the first time here), documents and original texts selected by experts from the MAK (where the Wiener Werkstätte archives have been housed since 1955). Full-page illustrations feature outstanding examples of Wiener Werkstätte objects, covering architecture, furniture, ceramics, glass, books, posters, postcards, carpets, jewelry, fashion and print design. The book also focuses on the innovative "total concept" used by this avant-garde association to establish an early "consumer culture," since the Werkstätte was one of the first organizations to develop a corporate identity that followed a product through every stage from concept and development to marketing.

Résumé:
Dating from the 1850s to the First World War, the Arts and Crafts movement was an international phenomenon of enormous scope and influence. It encompassed everything from architecture to town planning, metalwork and embroidery, in places as diverse as California and Budapest. Born of thinkers and practitioners in Victorian England its ideological currents reflect the era’s most pressing social, political and artistic concerns. In this book Rosalind Blakesley explores the common ideas that give cohesion to a movement of otherwise bewildering breadth and stylistic heterogeneity. At the origins of the movement was a reaction against industrialization, the long-standing division between traditional crafts and fine art and the over-elaborate ornamentation which disguised an object or building’s true 'function'. Early British Arts and Crafts practitioners campaigned for a revival of old craft techniques, for the elevation of the applied arts and for 'honesty' in design, ideas that were picked up and developed across Europe and the United States, with national variants quickly emerging. Germany, for example, recognized the potential of industrial techniques and experimented with standardization in design; in Finland, then annexed to Russia, Arts and Crafts was allied to the search for self-expression and a national style in art. Examining both acknowledged Arts and Crafts centres and lesser-known communities, Rosalind Blakesley concludes her survey with an evaluation of the Movement’s significance in the twenty-first century.

Design pervades our lives. Everything from drafting a PowerPoint presentation to planning a state-of-the-art bridge embodies this universal human activity. But what makes a great design? In this compelling and wide-ranging look at the essence of invention, distinguished engineer and author Henry Petroski argues that, time and again, we have built success on the back of failure--not through easy imitation of success. Success through Failure shows us that making something better--by carefully anticipating and thus averting failure--is what invention and design are all about. Petroski explores the nature of invention and the character of the inventor through an unprecedented range of both everyday and extraordinary examples--illustrated lectures, child-resistant packaging for drugs, national constitutions, medical devices, the world's tallest skyscrapers, long-span bridges, and more.
