Many bulbous plants have been dubbed "heralds of spring", but none is more recognisable than those carrying actual megaphones to spread the word: daffodils. Throughout history, painters, poets, and writers all over the world have been inspired by the flower’s various symbolisms. An introduction to the genus ‘Narcissus’ by Lou-Lou van Staaveren, with photographs by Elspeth Diederix, sets the tone for this issue. Other contributors include philosopher Christopher F. Julien, who reflects on how scent mixes with memories, and artist Tina Farifteh, who digs into her personal archive and writes about her memories of growing up in Iran, where daffodils are a symbol of hope.

In summer 2001, Potsdam, one of the world’s famous sites of classical garden design, with the beautiful grounds of the Sans Souci Palace, will be staging international contributions which respond to the tasks and challenges in contemporary landscape architecture. A large number of internationally known landscape architects, artists and architects have come together to cultivate 60 hectares of public park, to redesign urban spaces and other sites where historical townscapes and nature conjoin, to develop avant-garde artistic features, and to create the central spectacular exhibition space. This book will present the various parks and artistic interventions in their finished state, accompanied by lavish illustrations and descriptive texts, thus ensuring that the book remains topical thoughout the festival and will be an enduring documentation long after the doors have been closed and the new park with its array of leisure and recreational facitilities has been developed.

Résumé:
Since 1987 international exhibitions of contemporary art have taken place at Wanas in the south of Sweden. Artists exhibit their work in the park surrounding the medieval castle and in a barn. In this book, Marika Wachtmeister, director of the Wanas Foundation, describes her close collaboration with the artists as well as detailing the creative process from concept to completion. What is the process through which an idea becomes a work of art? This is the essential issue that Marika Wachtmeister addresses in her text on past exhibitions at Wanas. Art at Wanas provides a unique insight into the artistic process and contemporary art of today. In Swedish and English.

Résumé:
Ferruccio Vitale is America's forgotten landscape architect. Though his works like Skylands and Longwood Gardens are well known, his name has been eclipsed by his contemporary, Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. Yet Vitale's influence on the modern direction of landscape design and his promotion of it as a profession is arguably more significant than Olmsted's. His unique designs and philosophy, which challenged the then-dominant pictorial mode of landscape architecture, influenced generations of followerss, and is still felt today. Vitale (1875-1933) developed his rationale designs, based on the principles of composition from the fine arts and architecture, in both civic commissions and, most notably, at the country estates of captains of industry and finance, such as Rodman Wanamaker, Pierre S. DuPont, Solomon R. Guggenheim, and Condé Nast. He introduced an idealized and abstracted type of formal design that created beautiful spaces, structured large sites, and reflected informal and relaxed plant compositions. "Ferruccio Vitale" tours over 40 of his masterworks, photographed by some of the best landscape photographers of the time, including Samuel Gottscho. It recounts the compelling story of a life in the twentieth century, influenced by immigrant dreams, social clubs, and professional connections, and its culmination in some of the greatest landscapes of the 20th century.

Résumé:
This catalogue was published on the occasion of the exhibition "Down the path : the artist's garden after modernism" at the Queens Museum of Art. " This study will not perpetuate a restricted examination of the formal aspects of gardens but present a selection of divergent positions taken both from lived experience and scholarship. In this effort "Down the garden path: the artist’s garden after modernism" moves away from the narrow representation of only exhibiting garden documents, to show a broad range of materials that refer to gardens as metaphors or points of departure to understand history, politics, and our relationship to nature. There is a long and distinguished list of artists’ gardens. Presented here is a small selection chosen from the vast history, not because they are well known for several of them are imaginary and another has been all but destroyed, but because of their integrity to an uncompromising position about the world." (Valerie Smith). Participating artists : Vito Acconci, Ghada Amer, Lothar Baumgarten, Roberto Burle Marx, Tom Burr, Mel Chin, Thierry De Cordier, Mark Dion, Stan Douglas, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Dan Graham, Lonnie Graham, Paula Hayes, Jenny Holzer, Ronald Jones, Anissa Mack and Dave McKenzie, Gordon Matta-Clark, Franco Mondini-Ruiz, Isamu Noguchi, Nils Norman, Christian Philipp Müller, Ingrid Pollard, Robert Smithson, Alan Sonfist, Brian Tolle and Diana Balmori, Sergio Vega, Jan Vercruysse and Meg Webster.
