Stephen Stimson Associates landscape architect is a design firm deeply rooted in planning, design and construction of landscape in all its forms: garden, street, park, campus, community, and region. The firm is renowned for exceeding design goals with regard to space and use of materials, and Stimson's work often challenges design assumptions by using common materials in uncommon ways. Much of the firm's work--from residential to corporate to institutional--responds to the elements and natural foundations of the northeastern coastal United States.

Résumé:
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the notion of englishness was widely debated in English art and cultural circles. Might there be a specifically English landscape and an English way of representing it? Was the history of the nation unique, and might there be a particular and resilient national character? This original volume is the first to examine the intersection of national identity, modernization, and landscape in English art during the period from 1880 to 1940. Individual chapters consider how changing ideals and debates were at work in English art during these decades of social and cultural change. The contributors address topics ranging from the assimilation of French styles in English art before the First World War to themes of national identity and modernization in the years leading to the Second World War. From various fresh perspectives, this book offers new insight into the invention of nation and its consequences for English art during this critical era. David Peters Corbett is reader in history of art, University of York. Ysanne Holt is senior lecturer in history of art, University of Northumbria. Fiona Russell is general editor of the Henry Moore Series in Study of Sculpture, Ashgate Press.

Résumé:
The gardens and estate of La Foce constitute one of the most important and best kept early twentieth-century gardens in Italy. Amid 3,500 acres of farmland in the countryside near Pienza, with sweeping views of the Tuscan landscape, La Foce was the childhood dream garden of the late writer Marchesa Iris Origo. Passionate about the order and symmetry of Florentine gardens, Origo and her husband, Antonio, purchased the dilapidated villa in 1924, soliciting the help of English architect and family friend Cecil Pinsent to reawaken the natural magic of the property. Pinsent designed the structure of simple, elegant, box-edged beds and green enclosures that give shape to the Origos' shrubs, perennials, and vines, and created a garden of soaring cypress walks, native cyclamen, lawns, and wildflower meadows. Today the garden is a place of unusual and striking beauty, a green oasis in the barren Siena countryside. Situated in the Val d'Orcia, a wide valley in southeastern Tuscany that seems to exist on a larger, wilder scale than the rest of the Tuscan landscape, it is run by Benedetta and Donata Origo, and is open to the public one day a week. "La Foce : a garden and landscape in Tuscany" includes a historical essay and memoir by the daughter of La Foce's creators, Antonio and Iris Origo, along with photographs, sketches, and a critical analysis of the gardens. The volume not only focuses on the beauty of the gardens themselves and their indisputable merit as fascinating works of landscape architecture but also sees them within the context of both the larger Tuscan topography and the wider landscape of geography and history.

Résumé:
The projects brought together in this book refer to new architectures applied on locations that have experienced, firstly, sporadic warfare; secondly, areas where the earth has functioned as a source of geological workings; and thirdly, marginal territories and urban environments that have undergone industrial development. This initial structure proposes, then, three categories as points of reference for linking the contents, with sufficient flexibility for the final argument to be seen via other intersecting readings, tracing associations from one category to another. Thus, apart from the deliberate intensity of each intervention, and far from anchoring this in one or another group according to its nature, we present a wide range of projects hand led in terms of their specific singularities, while emphasizing their abilities and their potential to embrace new uses. Other documents are also presented to strengthen this argument, documents that provide alternatives to the architectural discipline and serve as possible comparable approaches: from the journalistic record to the clearly artistic contribution, taking in the scientific report. These documents will speak (also in terms of their particular uniqueness) of the abstraction and universalization of the degraded territory independently of the moment, its nature and causes. What, finally, the schemes presented share is that in terms of their execution they span a generally extended period of time; on top of that, the participation of institutions and administrative bodies as major sponsors; and, along with an impact on the contemporary landscape, a set of differentiated strategies and mechanisms of intervention

In summer 2001, Potsdam, one of the world’s famous sites of classical garden design, with the beautiful grounds of the Sans Souci Palace, will be staging international contributions which respond to the tasks and challenges in contemporary landscape architecture. A large number of internationally known landscape architects, artists and architects have come together to cultivate 60 hectares of public park, to redesign urban spaces and other sites where historical townscapes and nature conjoin, to develop avant-garde artistic features, and to create the central spectacular exhibition space. This book will present the various parks and artistic interventions in their finished state, accompanied by lavish illustrations and descriptive texts, thus ensuring that the book remains topical thoughout the festival and will be an enduring documentation long after the doors have been closed and the new park with its array of leisure and recreational facitilities has been developed.
