In galleries and museums, one’s perception of art, space, and atmosphere is largely determined by lighting. But which light settings should art and museum experts and exhibition designers choose, and on what basis are those choices made? Pioneering LED technologies make customized lighting scenarios possible, turning artificial light into an interactive material in museum architecture – not only in terms of design practice, but also in terms of real-time spatial experiences. Computer-controlled lighting technologies are breaking boundaries, allowing the individual to take full control of lighting design. ''Light Up'' explores the potential of dynamic artificial lighting technologies in museum architecture, offering new insights into the use of light in exhibition spaces.

Résumé:
In response to climate change, architects have been seeking a contemporary expression for durable, solid and homogeneous wall structures made of clay, wood, brick, concrete and recycled materials. This book follows 25 projects to analyze construction methods that predominantly involve materials that have a single origin and can be easily dismantled. It looks at a variety of different ways and scales in which architects have dealt with issues of mass and materiality, both in terms of design and construction. Structured according to the specific materials, the book allows direct comparisons, and renders visible solid building typologies and forms. Numerous drawings, developed especially for this book, document the projects. Two essays as well as interviews with Pepe Marquez and Arno Richter examine the strategies and background of monolithic architecture and solid construction methods.

Autour de nous, des objets en bois. Futiles.

Beirut-born, Paris-based architect Lina Ghotmeh (born 1980) specializes in ultra-contemporary, sustainable public and industrial buildings made from locally sourced natural materials. Her 2023 design for the Hermès leather workshop in Normandy, using the region’s traditional bricks, was the first manufacturing building in France to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. Light, another natural and physical phenomenon, has also been another source of inspiration for Ghotmeh. Her research on this topic, collected in Windows of Light, draws upon examples from centuries of visual culture. Ghotmeh explores the symbols, myths and innovations of light, and outlines how it fundamentally shapes our biological, astronomical and architectural environments. Anchoring the many representations of light is a photographic narrative that reminds us that access to artificial light in many regions of the world remains a privilege rather than a right.

How can the mycelial structure of fungi shape the future of architecture and design? Can mycelium-based materials replace existing materials or give rise to entirely new categories and forms of industrial material production? This book brings together leading international experts to examine the potential of mycelium for resource-efficient biomaterials. From building materials to textiles, scientific, technological, and practical approaches demonstrate the new perspectives that mycelium, a living material, can offer. Essays, case studies, and interviews report on current developments, address challenges, and explore how renewable materials can be integrated into circular and sustainable design practices.

Résumé:
Timber is a renewable material that also creates warm, welcoming spaces offering an emotional quality to their users. Light on Wood is a very personal story about how to design with mass timber. The pioneering architectural practice of atelierjones in Seattle, founded by Susan H. Jones, has diligently worked to decarbonize our built environment. In fact, it was one of the first practices in the US to use mass timber. Many beautiful buildings ensued over the past two decades, often developed in cooperation with local communities. But the office also investigated the behavior of CLT in case of fire and thus contributed to much-needed changes in building code. This book documents atelierjones’ multifaceted approach of design, research and advocacy and shows an attractive selection of the projects that have resulted from it.

Résumé:
"Brick Bonds" is a book documenting over 50 bond patterns used in brick-laying, including the basic wall bond patterns as well as paving patterns and more elaborate diaper patterns and other decorative techniques. We are surrounded by bricks, but seldom dwell on the patterns used to build them into walls and structures. The diverse range of bonds exist for different reasons – the traditional bonds, such as English Bond and Flemish Bond are used for their structural strength. Some bonds exist for their economy, speed of laying or ability to form a cavity wall, such as Stretcher Bond. Others, like Gothic Bond and Chevron Monk Bond were developed to create a more decorative and complex appearance. The most elaborate are the diaper patterns where different coloured bricks can be used to express beautiful diamond, heart or zigzag motifs.
