Résumé:
Dobrovic in Dubrovnik traces the history of a project of avant-garde modern architecture constructed in the 1930s in the Mediterranean landscape of the south Dalmatian coast of the Adriatic Sea. Architects Krunoslav Ivaniin and Ljiljana Blagojevic contribute comprehensive historical, theoretical and phenomenological readings of a highly specific venture in modern architecture (though with the usual universal aspirations)--the quintessentially modern villas, gardens and hotels built in Dubrovnik 70 years ago by the Serbian architect and urban planner Nikola Dobrovic (1897-1967). Confined to an area of about ten square miles and in use for only about ten years, the buildings are presented in this volume through previously unpublished original design drawings, black-and-white photographs from the 1930s and contemporary color photographs by Wolfgang Thaler.

Résumé:
The publications presents Josef Hoffman and Adolf Loos as two opposing tendencies within modernity, both whose legacy can still be felt today. The catalogue for the exhibition at the MAK (Austrian Museum for Applied Art/Contemporary Art in Vienna) focuses on two fundamental approaches of the Moderne movement in an antithetic comparison, including the preceding history and after-effects to this day: Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956) and Adolf Loos (1870-1933) represent opposing reactions to the basic problems of modern civilization, which were triggered by the process of industrialization and democratization. Two different concepts for a modern way of life were created: Hoffmann promoted a comprehensive aestheticization of all spheres of life, while Loos interpreted architecture and design as the functional background for the development of individual personalities.

Résumé:
This set of essays brings together studies that challenge interpretations of the development of modernist architecture in Third World countries during the Cold War. The topics look at modernism’s part in the transnational development of building technologies and the construction of national and cultural identity. Architectural modernism is far more than another instance of Western expansionist aspirations; it has been developed in cross-cultural spaces and variously localized into nation-building programs and social welfare projects.

Résumé:
In this story, we meet, among others, the Boston Brahmins Jack Phillips and Nathaniel Saltonstall; the self-taught architect, carpenter and painter Jack Hall; the Finn Olav Hammarström, who had worked for Alvar Aalto; and the prolific Charlie Zehnder, who brought the lessons of both Frank Lloyd Wright and Brutalism to the Cape. Initially, these designers had no clients; they built for themselves and their families, or for friends sympathetic to their ideals. Their homes were laboratories, places to work through ideas without spending much money. The result of this ferment is a body of work unlike any other, a regional modernism fusing the building traditions of Cape Cod fishing towns with Bauhaus concepts and postwar experimentation.
