Résumé:
To photograph avant-garde architecture is its own particular art, requiring careful attention to geometry, composition, lighting, and the ineluctable feel of a created space. In his famous photographs of modern architectural marvels, Marcel Chassot doesn’t merely capture a building’s appearance; he transports us to the space, recreating both its ambience and its grandeur. This volume assembles buildings designed by the giants of modern architecture—from Frank Gehry’s surrealist twists and stacks to Zaha Hadid’s formal speed and fluidity, from Beijing National Stadium to the Sony Center in Berlin and the World Trade Center Transportation Hub in New York—offering a wealth of scenes from international contemporary architecture. Wolfgang Meisenheimer sheds light on the fundamental principles of Chassot’s photographic worldview and distinguishes between three layers of thought in which the work is rooted: the Euclidean orders, echoes of the modern philosophy of the lived body, and the legacy of Cubism from the beginnings of modern painting. With its felicitous interplay of brilliant architectural photography, exquisite design, and thoughtfully researched essays, this book is a total work of art.

Résumé:
Yoshihiko Ueda's work spans a broad range of photographic categories, from landscapes to nature, portraiture, and still life, and is characterised by his pursuit of the ''whole'' – capturing the very essence and energy of bodies and their environments. His oeuvre thus reflects a process of tracing topographies, especially when it comes to his images of forests, which he began making three decades ago. Conventionally attractive landscape photography holds no interest for Ueda, a fact that becomes clear as we are plunged into the depths of the Quinault Rain Forest in Washington State, the Yakushima cedar forests in southern Japan, and the virgin forest of the Kasuga Taisha shrine in Nara.

Résumé:
This artist’s book by Nico Joana Weber mounts an insightful and calculated photographic investigation into the dichotomy of rational (European) modernism in architecture versus the “irrational” proliferation of nature in tropical regions. Citing a range of historical and cultural references, from Le Corbusier’s visits to Argentina and Niemeyer’s Brazilian modernism, to the Amazonian expeditions of Lévi-Strauss, her vast collection of images points to how the fragile balance between architecture, the body, and vegetation inherent to the tropics shifts the separation between nature and culture so crucial to the Western perspective into the realm of the impossible.

Résumé:
For this book, Danish artist and photographer Kasper Akhøj documented the ongoing restoration of E-1027, Eileen Gray's modernist villa in France. Based on photographs taken by Gray which were first published in 1929, Akhøj's photographs are a kind of remake, recreating the perspective and composition of the originals. During several visits to the villa between 2009 and 2017, he produced up to six versions of each of Gray's images, but only included one of them here. The overlap of chronologies emphasises the restoration process and references the fascinating influence of a succession of occupants. With essays by Beatriz Colomina and Amy Zion, plus an interview with Akhøj.

For ''American Winter'', Johansson travelled through semi-deserted towns in Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado, finding as much beauty as there was misery in landscapes cloaked in snow: an isolated church floating in a mottled sea of white; leafless trees lining endless highways leading to nothing; long shadows cast on vernacular architecture in the season's merciless sun.

Résumé:
Completed between 1989 and 1995, ''Fish Story'' saw Allan Sekula's career-long pursuit of a contemporary 'critical realism' reach its most complex articulation. ''Fish Story'' reconstructed a realist model of photographic representation, while taking a critical stance towards traditional documentary photography. It also marked Sekula's ?rst sustained exploration of the ocean as a key space of globalisation. A key issue in ''Fish Story'' is the connection between containerized cargo movement and the growing internationalization of the world industrial economy, with its effects on the actual social space of ports. This new edition of the long out-of-print seminal publication includes a new introduction by Professor Laleh Khalili (SOAS University).
