Italian photographer Luigi Ghirri (1943–92) made ''Cardboard landscapes'' (''Paesaggi di cartone'') during his travels around Europe, coining the term 'sentimental geography' to describe his unique artistic approach of examining the ordinary to prove it remarkable. The original handmade album features over 100 chromogenic colour prints pasted onto the pages of a blank book, and was gifted by Ghirri to John Szarkowski, then the Director of the Department of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art, in the 1970s. A singular work of art, ''Cardboard landscapes'' is now being published for the first time. The collection is an anomaly within Ghirri’s overall oeuvre, as it prioritizes complex composition rather than the sweeping tableaux for which he is best known. In this series of works, he regards the printed image as the subject, framing a kaleidoscope of photographs and advertisements to tell a poetic visual narrative that reflects at once regional, personal and popular culture, revealing a fascinating impulse to investigate his role within his own medium.

Résumé:
A project composed across several decades, Guido Guidi's Lunario takes the name of a traditional farmer’s almanac to bring together several strands of work all relating to the moon. Distortion, experimentation and illusion inform Guidi’s earlier work of the late 1960s and early 1970s, further developed by the introduction of a fish-eye lens. The moon’s physical form echoes throughout the works: in a woman’s face, or a child’s playing ball caught between light and shadow. Guidi’s barren, lunar landscapes give way in the 1980s to colour photographs, all of which culminate in the dramatic partial solar-eclipse of August 11, 1999. Throughout Lunario, Guido Guidi comes back to the moon as a source of stylistic and thematic inspiration: a symbol of melancholy and madness, changeability and a constant reminder of the transience of everyday life.

Résumé:
In this book Sam Contis presents a new window onto the work of the iconic American photographer Dorothea Lange. Drawing from Lange’s extensive archive, Contis constructs a fragmented, unfamiliar world centred around the figure of the day sleeper – at once a symbol of respite and oblivion. The book shows us one artist through the eyes of another, with Contis responding to resonances between her and Lange’s ways of seeing. It reveals a largely unknown side of Lange, and includes previously unseen photographs of her family, portraiture from her studio, and pictures made in the streets of San Francisco and the East Bay. 'Day Sleeper' will be featured alongside other works of Contis’ in the exhibition Dorothea Lange: Words & Pictures at the Museum of Modern Art, February–May 2020.

Résumé:
The picturesque vistas and apparent stability of Switzerland have made it an elusive subject for contemporary photography. Over a five-year period (2014 – 2019), Cole found a distinctly new way to look at a country that has been the quintessence of tourist experience for almost two centuries. Fernweh muses on the German word for a longing to be elsewhere. Cole’s meditative and scrupulously composed work, made with colour film, is evocative of the hidden history of the Alpine nation as well as of its highly curated terrain. Returning to Switzerland year after year, Cole shares the patience and mild palette of luminaries of contemporary European photography — but the constructivist tension in these images is all his own. With photographs shot in every corner of the country — from Vaud to Graubu¨nden to Lugano — Fernweh creates a vision of Switzerland that, though largely devoid of human presence, is rich in human traces; none more so than Cole’s own distinct way of seeing.

Résumé:
In this publication, Aikaterini Gegisian brings together a diverse range of found photographic material produced in Western Europe and the USA during the 1960s and 1970s. Composed of a series of 59 collages, the book playfully recontextualises images from popular culture that Gegisian has sourced — from pornographic magazines, tourist catalogues and National Geographic spreads — in order to subvert the way that the body, nature and pleasure have been represented in Western capitalist fantasies. Divided into nine chapters that follow a metaphysical narrative of colour and sensation, the book ultimately seeks to locate a ‘spontaneous other’; a notion of the self and of pleasure that exists beyond the confines of popular culture and its dominant modes of representation

Résumé:
This publication offers an alternative account of one of the most fabled episodes in photographic history: the cross-country journeys that produced Stephen Shore’s luminous new vision of the American landscape, Uncommon Places. Along with his large-format camera, Shore also brought a 35mm Leica on his travels. The images made with it, on luminous colour slide film, are intimate, spontaneous and personal, while retaining Shore’s studied formal sensitivity. In these entirely unseen photographs, a parallel iteration of an iconic vision emerges like a piece of music played in a new key. The vocabulary is familiar: highways and homes, phone boxes, fast food and sun-strewn parking lots. But the alternative format unmistakably re-envisions these subjects through distinct experiments with composition, attitude, and colour. Transparencies uncovers both a detail-oriented survey of the American landscape of the 1970s and a rigorous, imaginative exercise in form by an undisputed modern master. With an afterword by Britt Salvesen, curator at LACMA, titled 'Ordinary Speech: The Vernacular in Stephen Shore’s Early 35mm Photography'.

Résumé:
Documenting Vera Lutter’s ambitious residency at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, this book traces the artist’s process and features images from her two-year-long photography project. Vera Lutter’s work has taken her and her pinhole camera all over the world, most recently to LACMA as its artist in residence. Stationing a mobile camera obscura outside the museum, Lutter captured the exterior of the campus buildings in images that transform the mid- and late-20th century architecture. Using an enormous camera, custom-built into the museum’s Old Masters gallery, she captured the long perspective on the classically installed room, echoing historical paintings of museum interiors. Finally, with four smaller cameras, Lutter photographed various works in the LACMA collection, transforming colorful paintings into ethereal black-and-white images. In contrast to digitized photography, which allows artists to fine-tune and perfect their product, Lutter’s analogue pinhole photographs are a refreshing reminder of the medium’s origins.

Résumé:
The work of photographer Steven B. Smith chronicles the transition of the Western landscape into suburbia. Robert Pinsky, US Poet Laureate, wrote of his work, “Smith’s images record not so much a contrast as two violent absences joining as a single force. Landfill, seedling, turnabout, heating coil collude with the sky and mountains in a triumph of disproportion: scale not so much confused or lost as irrelevant.” Steven B. Smith: Your Mountain is Waiting documents the accelerating suburbanization of Smith’s native Utah. Peeling back the layers of westward expansion with equal parts subtlety and irony, Smith captures the new McMansions springing up against the rocky, rust-red mountains and deep blue skies of the West. Smith is equally attentive to the cast of characters that fill these new landscapes—the people that build them, and the people that live in them.
