Résumé:
Master printer Michael Flomen brings his darkroom into the environment to create large-scale, avant-garde photograms in confluence with nature. Trading his camera for light-sensitive materials such as photographic paper, he works with water, fireflies, wind, rain, and other natural phenomena to create monumental photograms, revealing things we cannot see with the naked eye. With images that originate in streets to those forged in the wilderness, this monograph presents 182 images and eight critical essays that trace the evolution of Flomen’s vision. His message is particularly vital today, as we learn to mend our relationship with the environment.

Résumé:
For the past decade, photographer Mark Ruwedel has been compiling an epic photographic account of the natural environment of his home city of Los Angeles. From the stark Californian coast to the vast expanses of the interior – many of which have been further lain bare by wildfires – Ruwedel tracks a unique ecology in constant, if subtle, dialogue with the human life that surrounds it: one where wildness is designed, contested, permitted, or resisted to varying degrees of success. In this first of four volumes, Ruwedel follows the Los Angeles River from Big Tujunga Wash to the Pacific Ocean. Using patient, forensic large- and medium-format photography in black and white, Ruwedel recalls the legacy of nineteenth-century photographer-cartographers such as Carleton Watkins and Timothy O’Sullivan, as well as land artists and New Topographics photographers of the 1970s, while forging his own elucidating relationship with the landscape. The series title "Landscapes of four ecologies" recalls architectural critic Reyner Baynam classic study "Los Angeles: The architecture of four ecologies," which describes the city as "one of the ecological wonders of the modern world."

Résumé:
Imagine a collection of perforated leaves in which organisms like insects, fungi, or bacteria existing in the foliage have created an array of patterns. Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky’s ''Feeding on light'' examines photosynthesis through experimental photography. Bringing the outdoors into her analogue colour darkroom, the artist captures the traces of the often symbiotic relationships observed between trees, insects, and the sun. The book takes the form of a field guide, with an extensive index of common and scientific plant names linking the hundreds of photograms, contact prints, and negative prints. Essays contextualise her work through biology, ecology, and philosophy.

Résumé:
The images of American photographer Mary Ellen Mark are icons of documentary and humanistic photography. Focusing her camera on the socially disadvantaged and those on the fringes of society, she told the stories of her protagonists without prejudice. In the context of the emerging women’s movement in the USA during the 1960s and 70s, and as a freelance photographer at a time when print media was suffering its first major crisis, Mark fought her way to the forefront of female voices in photojournalism. Encounters provides an expansive cross-section of the photographer’s full body of work. The book focuses on five iconic series that contributed significantly to Mark’s reputation: Ward 81 in which she photographed residents at an Oregon psychiatric hospital for women; a reportage on prostitutes on Falkland Road in Mumbai; a tribute to Mother Teresa’s charitable work; Indian Circus, documenting traveling circus families; and the long-term project Streetwise, in which Mark followed the life of Erin Blackwell (Tiny) for more than 30 years. For the first time, this book contextualizes these works within Mark’s œuvre and presents them alongside original magazine spreads and archival material—including contact sheets, letters and notebooks—to reveal the breadth of her accomplishments and singularly compassionate eye.

Résumé:
Often out of print, this new edition of Joel Sternfeld’s seminal book returns to the format of the original 1987 edition. All of the now classic images within it—alongside a group of never published photographs—examine a once pristine land stewarded by indigenous peoples who needed no lessons in stewardship, and a land now occupied by a mix of peoples hoping for salvation within the fraught paths of late capitalism. The result suggests a vast nation whose prospects have much to do with global prospects, a “teenager of the world” unaware of its strengths, filled with idealism and frequent failings.
