Résumé:
This book is the first monograph to be published on the artist Laure Tiberghien. It brings together 84 prints, allowing the reader to gain an appreciation of 10 years of work and experimentation. Tiberghien is intrigued by the visual and plastic aspects of photography and enjoys exploring the inventive potential of this medium. She has developed a process avoiding the use of the camera that takes its place within a long lineage of experimentation in photography, which has notably given rise to Anna Atkins’ cyanotypes and Man Ray’s Rayographs. Produced through the combination of chemistry, light and time, her ''abstract'' photographs emerge from a masterful approach to composition, whereby colours are organized after having been tested first to obtain the desired tone relationships. The surface, in this case the type of paper selected, also plays a primordial role. For example, Cibachrome results in a ''wet'' effect and very dense colours whereas a metallic paper offers a more electric result. If at times she may leave things open to accident or chance, while giving life to shapes and colours Tiberghien has put in place a procedure, through her constant testing, that although far from mechanical affords her control over the result. All the pieces she produces in this manner are necessarily unique, another feature her art shares with painting. The book’s design, by the studio SP Millot, arrays the text of the essay by Erik Verhagen across its pages, in a way that punctuates the images just as the images propel the text.

''In 1991, I moved to Berlin for four years. The Berlin wall had just fallen but you could still see sections of it, and certainly still feel the divide between the Capitalist and Socialist states. Discovering Central Europe meant learning about some very dark history. The scars of Totalitarianism were deep, visible and raw from both the Cold War and the preceding Second World War. These photographs were taken in Montreal during the Fall and Winter of 2013/14. I wanted to find a common visual ground where, through historical images we've all seen, my memories could be shared. I revisited these memories influenced by the political climate and my fear of a rising wave of militant nationalism and the return of the Police State. This work reflects some of my concerns through the evoking of personal and collective memories and the linking of present with past, and local to global.'' Eric Tschaeppeler

''Raum'' simply affirms an undefined 'space' and with this work for Angle the Japanese photographer Hayahisa Tomiyasu selects a tiny slice of the richness of public space. An observation of a lizard basking in the sun on a summer’s day in Zürich has led to a photographic sequence in black and white – in portrait as well as landscape format. The demarcation of the photographic space – the extremely limited detail – is consistently kept low, around ground level. Through the sequential and the serial, with a point of departure in the close surroundings, Tomiyasu is preoccupied with new views of various territories in the shared space where we are separated from others’ invisible boundaries. Here the animals are subject to an alternative, instinct-driven logic. But humans too operate with distance, marking and ownership. An urge for invisibility and camouflage can appear on the radar at any time, and make us want to scuttle away like a lizard.

Résumé:
Dag Nordbrenden’s publication ''Arituba Spa Center'' is a photographic study of an unfinished and broken-down Brazilian apartment complex in massive concrete architecture. The plan was to build holiday apartments, but the project came to grief in 2008 as a result of the financial crisis and money-laundering scandals in which Norwegian investors and developers were also involved. In that sense the pictures reflect economic decline as well as architectural collapse. The intended holiday idyll has become an image of global economic hubris. Nordbrenden has gone into this material wasteland with an awareness of photography’s long love affair with the aesthetic of decay.
