Three decades after its completion, Haas’ most personal and least-known project is now available for the first time in this exquisitely produced book. Presented in a clean and spare design, this volume features reproductions of superb quality that allow readers to appreciate his mastery of color, light, and composition, and his ability to capture the mystery of daily life. For this collection Haas drew on images made in all phases of his career from 1952 to 1984, and, despite the title, most of these photographs are not abstract but rather clear, focused, well-exposed images of recognizable surfaces from the observable world around him: crumbling paint, graphic road markings, fabric, liquids, detritus, decay, and torn posters. David Campany’s eloquent introductory essay lays the groundwork for a deep appreciation of the slideshow which, in book form, can be savored and understood in an entirely new way.

Ville Palladiane takes shape through details, margins, atmospheres, and traces of contemporary life within the historic villas designed by Andrea Palladio. A complex and classical theme - at times seemingly obvious - was approached by students with curiosity, enthusiasm, and a touch of genuine naïveté, resulting in a visual narrative that captures Palladio’s timeless, yet strikingly modern, architectural universe. This volume is part of Prospettive, a photographic documentation project by the Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione, curated by Carlo Birrozzi and Alessandro Coco. Produced during the 2023–24 Architectural Photography course led by Alberto Sinigaglia at ISIA Urbino, the work contributes to ICCD’s ongoing exploration of architectural themes through student perspectives.

Résumé:
"aphasia" is divided into the four seasons, ver (spring), hiems (winter), autumnus (fall), and aestas (summer), symbolizing in this context the various stages that bridge the moments before, during, and after transformational moments. The linearity of the seasons is disrupted throughout the book through the use of translucent pages, highlighting their transformation. In ver the book opens with a stream of dreamy and very light images, representing peace and stasis, these are the moments before. In hiems, the pallet turns very cold, the images are set on black, with various figures in states of flight or distress. Autumus presents moments of both discovery and decay, dual aspects of healing processes, and finally, aestas, features a return to the vitality of the outside world.

Résumé:
With steps leading down to the water’s edge, stepwells are inverted buildings that descend several stories below ground. Often, they are as monumental and ornate as a church, and this is intentional. They are a source of water, a gathering space, and a temple all at once. Stepwells create a visual and spatial experience unlike any other, in which the below-ground remains connected to the sun and sky above. There are thousands of stepwells across the Indian Subcontinent, many of them 500-1,000 years old, each one different from the other. Most lie abandoned and overlooked, in varying states of preservation or, more often, disrepair, but they remain beautiful and compelling. The 48 photographs in this book were made across India to convey the beauty and diversity of these structures and the striking ambiances they elicit. A brief text accompanies the images to provide history and context, interspersed with several architectural drawings by Tanvi Jain. The images seek to give readers a sense of what it feels like to immerse oneself in such a unique, meditative space, and to be impelled towards the very source of life: water.

Résumé:
For Denise Scott Brown (born 1931), who is among the most important architects of the postwar era, photography has long served as a critical medium through which to perceive, document and think about the world in which designers operate. Fascinated by the ephemeral and the everyday, Scott Brown took photographs for fun, research and teaching, and later as a component of design and planning projects. Through the lens of her Alpa camera she sought to penetrate the irreducible complexities of life around her—and to make a case for the architect and planner's role in intervening within it. "Encounters" gathers an essential collection of Scott Brown's photography from the 1950s to the 1970s, presented here for the first time. The book focuses on the formative decades during which Scott Brown departed her childhood home of Johannesburg to study in London, traveled through Europe, moved to the United States, met her partner Robert Venturi and eventually developed the profound interest in postwar suburbia from which her most famous work, "Learning from Las Vegas", would emerge. Moving thematically rather than sequentially through Scott Brown's photographic oeuvre, "Encounters" opens up new ways of reading this body of work, presenting it less as a continuous historical record than as the product of a careful and studied practice of observation.

Résumé:
Between agitation and lightness, Fusako Kodama depicts the effervescence of modern Japan. From 1960 to 1980, she captures the atmosphere of places and the energy of people.Movement is constant; disorder occurs at times; gestures are carefree and instinctive: Fusako Kodama captures forward momentum. Her spontaneous photographs summon surprising perspectives where subjects appear slightly out of sync. Between restlessness and lightness, Fusako Kodama portrays a certain effervescence of modern Japan. From 1960 to 1980, she captures the atmosphere of cities and villages inhabited by animated beings. Through her unusual and spontaneous framing, the prolific photographer casts a gaze that is both gentle and vibrant over twenty years of Japan. 1960-1980 is the first book by Fusako Kodama published in the West, where she is still relatively unknown. This work aligns with the ongoing efforts of Chose Commune, which aims to shed light on contemporary Japanese photographers beyond their country of origin.
