Résumé:
Art Isn’t Fair is the title of the last video completed in 2012 by Allan Sekula, a work commenting on the rise of art fairs as yet another international gathering of moneyed elites. This new compilation of textual, photographic and filmic essays underscores Sekula’s longstanding engagement with the many intersections between art, photography, and the shifting terrain of power struggles from both a local and international perspective. Bringing together an ensemble of works that Sekula never had the chance to publish together before his death in 2013, this new collection expands our sense of the persistent depth and breadth of Sekula’s concerns and commitments.

‘Conference of the Birds’ shows an outtake from an analysis of the correlation between time and place and of the historical Iranian landscape. How do places appear and disappear? How do we attach meaning to a certain site and in what way photography can deal with deconstructed icons in comparison to the (a-)historical palm tree sticking out its tongue? A small desert(...)

Résumé:
‘Conference of the Birds’ shows an outtake from an analysis of the correlation between time and place and of the historical Iranian landscape. How do places appear and disappear? How do we attach meaning to a certain site and in what way photography can deal with deconstructed icons in comparison to the (a-)historical palm tree sticking out its tongue? A small desert village has been photographed obsessively and captured from every angle possible. Elements are positioned in the frame so that they are repeated in the next. The photographs move in closely to the landscape of a palm tree village. The village is small and serene. Palm trees appear all over the place, they are burned, bend, dry and dead. They resemble pillars and artefacts that are left behind on various historical sites and they can be associated with land art installations.

Résumé:
‘1099’ is the second part of ‘2099’, a series of photographic works by Sybren Vanoverberghe. The work originates from his interest in how time changes the landscape and the objects that can be found within. Vanoverberghe is questioning how we look at artifacts, icons and our (nearby) historical surroundings. In ‘1099’ the focus of the work is mainly put on the materiality that can be found at several historical locations. The book shows diverse elements dealing with a notion of the constant evolution of history.
