Résumé:
'The Curatorial Conundrum' looks at the burgeoning field of curatorship and tries to imagine its future. Indeed, practitioners and theorists consider a variety of futures: the future of curatorial education; the future of curatorial research; the future of curatorial and artistic practice; and the institutions that will make these other futures possible. Contributors examine the proliferation of graduate programs in curatorial studies over the last twenty years, and consider what can be taught without giving up what is precisely curatorial, within the ever-expanding parameters of curatorial practice in recent times.

Résumé:
Ever since the nineteen-nineties, curatorial discourse has revolved around the figure of the professional curator. Consequently, curatorial politics is usually considered the direct result of a curator's deliberate acts and intentions. Now, however, new institutional models and modes of exhibition practice together with key shifts in funding and collecting strategies have revealed aspects of curatorial politics over which the exhibition-maker has little or no control. The present volume presents a series of essays by noted art theorists and cultural scientists that go beyond the perspective of the individual curator to reveal these previously unexplored levels of curatorial politics.

Museum directors are beginning to question the role of their museums in the production of knowledge and participation, in creating links between the present and the past. Museum education has evolved as a practice in its own right, questioning, expanding, and transforming exhibitions and institutions. How does museum work change if we conceive of curating and education as an integrated practice? In this anthology, scholars employed at a range of museums address this question.

Résumé:
Between 1969 and 1974, Lucy Lippard curated four exhibitions of contemporary art, which have become renowned as her “numbers shows.” Each took the population of the city in which it was shown as its title: 557,087 in Seattle, 955,000 in Vancouver, 2,972,453 in Buenos Aires and c. 7,500, which opened in Valencia, California, before touring the U.S. and then traveling to London. From Conceptualism to Feminism follows Lippard’s curatorial trajectory, analyzing her transition from a writer about art to a maker of exhibitions, and tracing her growing political engagement and involvement with feminism. Extensive photographic material is complemented by a major new essay by Cornelia Butler and interviews with Lucy Lippard, Seth Siegelaub and with artists in c. 7,500. The volume also includes an analysis of artists’ initiatives in Argentina, which give a context for Lippard’s emerging political consciousness. From Conceptualism to Feminism is the third publication in Afterall’s Exhibition Histories series, which investigates exhibitions that have shaped the way contemporary art is experienced, made and discussed.

Résumé:
Based on practical experiments, ''Unlearning with Translation'' posits the act of translation as a pedagogical tool, a political act, and ultimately a gesture of care in these tense cultural times. Written by French curator, writer, editor, and self-taught translatress Virginie Bobin, the essay revisits a series of workshops, exhibitions, and other collective activities that took translation as both subject and method to unsettle entrenched conceptions of language, identity, and belonging. In particular, the ambiguous notion of "untranslatability" is used as a lens through which to examine the power relations at play in those institutional, economic, and political contexts inhabited by art workers. Alongside collaborations with artists including Mercedes Azpilicueta, Serena Lee, and Mounira Al Solh, Bobin's reflections are grounded in her experience co-founding and facilitating the editorial and curatorial platform Qalqalah, which relies on translation as a tool for the production and publication of situated knowledge in three languages—French, Arabic, and English. Informed by feminist genealogies and methodologies throughout, the book maintains that collective labor and relations are key aspects of any critical practice, as exemplified in the concluding correspondence with Andrea Ancira.

Résumé:
This book examines trends in the display of art since the mid-twentieth century, focusing particularly on institutional issues. The contributors present a series of case studies that illuminate the practices of museums, galleries, and exhibitions in Western Europe and the United States and that encourage reflection on the experience of the spectator. The first section of the book considers the traditional sanctum of art, the museum, and how approaches to display have changed as modern museums have sought to become accessible to new audiences. In the second section, case studies address issues surrounding temporary exhibitions, their dominance of the display of art today, and the implications of this for artists, spectators, and the institutions that stage such exhibitions. The third section considers the wider social context in which art is displayed today and discusses the widespread reliance on urban regeneration projects, with special reference to modern art museums, and the place of heritage in Britain, specifically the cult of the country house. The book concludes with an exploration of the art world in contemporary Ireland and the role of Irish institutions in the production and reception of art.

Résumé:
Every city has at least one, and great cities often have more. From the Louvre to the Bilbao Guggenheim, the museum has had a long-standing relationship with the city. This ground-breaking volume examines the meaning of museum architecture in the urban environment, considering important issues such as forms of civic representation, urban regeneration, cultural tourism and the museumification of the city itself. Bringing together an international group of distinguished scholars from a range of disciplines, this volume bridges the gap between museum studies and traditional architectural history. The contributors explore the conceptual architectural frameworks that govern the museum's diverse symbolic structures and focus attention on the complex ways in which museums function in the city. Ranging from the 17th century to the present day, the detailed and thoroughly researched case studies are drawn from Great Britain, continental Europe, South America and Australia.
