Résumé:
Postindustrial transitions and changing cultures of nature have produced an unprecedented degree of fascination with urban biodiversity. The “other nature” that flourishes in marginal urban spaces, at one remove from the controlled contours of metropolitan nature, is not the poor relation of rural flora and fauna. Indeed, these islands of biodiversity underline the porosity of the distinction between urban and rural. In this volume, Matthew Gandy explores urban nature as a multilayered material and symbolic entity, through the lens of urban ecology and the parallel study of diverse cultures of nature at a global scale. A study of urban nature that draws together different strands of urban ecology as well as insights derived from feminist, posthuman, and postcolonial thought.

Résumé:
It has become conventional to think of urbanism and landscape as opposing one another—or to think of landscape as merely providing temporary relief from urban life as shaped by buildings and infrastructure. But, driven in part by environmental concerns, landscape has recently emerged as a model and medium for the city, with some theorists arguing that landscape architects are the urbanists of our age. In this volume, one of the field’s pioneers presents a powerful case for rethinking the city through landscape.

Résumé:
Urban gardening and agriculture have become important elements of sustainable urban planning in the context of persistent urbanization amid limited resources. However, a consideration of the cultural-historical dimension has been lacking up to now. The editors present the first comprehensive outline of traditional forms of food production in cities to help preserve this valuable knowledge. On the basis of current research findings, they develop new perspectives and guidelines for recognizing traditional food production systems as an aspect of cultural heritage and for dealing with urban agriculture worldwide.

In a public park in the Hague, British artist Nils Norman (born 1966) has devised an unusual work of art: one that grows and blossoms and produces delicious fruit and vegetables. Norman's "Edible Park" was developed using the principles of permaculture, a form of vegetable gardening in which different plants are combined in such a way that they complement one another's needs as they grow. More than just a gardening model, permaculture is a nature-based design philosophy that can be used as a guide for architecture, product design and to improve society in general. In Edible Park, Norman explains his methods, his sources of inspiration and the artistic and social-critical context around his work.
