Leur travail est présenté en association avec plusieurs images, également issues de sa collection, de trois photographes d’ailleurs – Eadweard Muybridge (Britannique, 1830-1904), Miroslav Tichý (Tchécoslovaque, 1926-2011) et Martin Parr (Britannique, 1952- ). Dans son essai, Robert Graham expose son approche critique. Comme il l’a observé, les photographies en séries et en groupes révèlent, par la répétition et le motif, les intérêts sous-jacents de l’artiste, et la conjonction du dernier groupe de photographes met en relief certains aspects des trois premiers. Chaque artiste pratique une rhétorique qui nous aide à comprendre comment nous pensons à travers la photographie. En tant que commissaire de cette exposition, Graham s’est intéressé à la relation entre l’image et la connaissance, et à la façon dont l’une soutient l’autre d’une manière similaire à celle dont ce qu’il appelle métaphoriquement ''l’illustration' et la 'légende' sont liées. De cette manière, la photographie favorise un certain type de connaissance; en effet, les informations spatiales fournies par la photographie constituent une sorte de géographie à part entière, qui a été décrite comme 'l’œil de l’histoire'.

L'objectif de cette campagne photographique d'ampleur était d'inciter à l'amélioration de l'habitat berlinois et à l'éradication de l'insalubrité. Cette collection est exceptionnelle dans l'histoire de la photographie, à plus d'un titre : par son thème : approche photographique des espaces domestiques en présence de leurs occupants ; par son époque : juste avant et pendant la Grande Guerre ; par sa durée : sur deux décennies ; par son unité de lieu, au coeur de Berlin ; par sa prouesse technique : photographier des intérieurs sombres constitue une difficulté majeure. Le document dans son ensemble renseigne également tout un pan de l'économie liée au travail à domicile. L'articulation logement/atelier est très explicite : on perçoit l'espace du travail et les dispositifs techniques qui s'y rattachent. Par leur qualité, leur vérité, leur rigueur documentaire (notamment par la précision des légendes), elles sont saisissantes et peuvent susciter un certain effroi au vu des conditions d'habiter une métropole ouvrière au tournant du XXe siècle. Les femmes ont alors fait preuve d’une capacité à affronter instinctivement, dans des conditions historiques données, certains refoulements culturels et sociaux caractéristiques du monde occidentalisé. A commencer par ceux du corps et du geste. Ainsi, à la même période où débutait le lent processus d’acceptation du corporel dans la sphère culturelle occidentale, de façon curieusement analogue, les femmes artistes s’en faisaient courageusement les interprètes – bien qu’au prix de nombreuses difficultés – car elles-mêmes avaient subi depuis des siècles le même phénomène de « relégation » des activités intellectuelles et artistiques. In 1967, The Museum of Modern Art presented "New documents", a landmark exhibition organized by John Szarkowski that brought together a selection of works by three photographers whose individual achievements signaled the artistic potential for the medium in the 1960s and beyond: Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander and Garry Winogrand. Though largely unknown at the time, these three photographers are now universally acknowledged as artists of singular talent within the history of photography. The exhibition articulated a profound shift in the landscape of 20th-century photography, and interest in the exhibition has only continued to expand. Yet, until now, there has been no publication that captures its content. Published in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the exhibition, Arbus Friedlander Winogrand features full-page reproductions of the 94 photographs included in the exhibition, along with Szarkowski’s original wall text, press release, installation views and an abundance of archival material. Essays by curator Sarah Hermanson Meister and critic Max Kozloff, who originally reviewed the exhibition for The Nation in 1967, critically situate the exhibition and its reception, and examine its lasting influence on the field of photography.

The exhibition articulated a profound shift in the landscape of 20th-century photography, and interest in the exhibition has only continued to expand. Yet, until now, there has been no publication that captures its content. Published in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the exhibition, Arbus Friedlander Winogrand features full-page reproductions of the 94 photographs included in the exhibition, along with Szarkowski’s original wall text, press release, installation views and an abundance of archival material. Essays by curator Sarah Hermanson Meister and critic Max Kozloff, who originally reviewed the exhibition for The Nation in 1967, critically situate the exhibition and its reception, and examine its lasting influence on the field of photography.

"New York in photobooks" gathers and studies a selection of images of the capital of the twentieth century, the most photogenic and most photographed city in history.
