Dès l'invention du premier procédé de photographie, la daguerréotype, il apparaît évident que la nouvelle découverte doit être mise au service de l'archéologie, et remplacer désormais le dessin ou la gravure. Très vite, les vues des monuments se multiplient et les sites archéologiques italiens, fréquentés depuis deux siècles par les voyageurs du « Grand Tour », deviennent un motif de prédilection des photographes, en particulier des frères Alinari, qui, en 1854, ont créé à Florence leur atelier de reproductions d'art. Du nord au sud de l'Italie, de Suse à Ségeste, ils nous font découvrir l'immense amphitéâtre de Vérone, Rome, mille et mille fois glorifiée, entre Palatin, Forum et Colisée, la villa Hadriana et le temple de la Sibylle à Tivoli, les vestiges d'Herculanum, et surtout Pompéi, qui dévoile son immensité, ses intérieurs décorés, ses morts aussi, figés dans l'éternité. Dans le sud, ils montrent Paestum et ses temples immergés dans la solitude, les sites de Sicile, plus sauvages encore... Des images singulières, tout à la fois porteuses d'informations et d'émotion, entre décor antique « authentique » et cadre pittoresque du XIXe siècle, qui sont les premières représentations de ces lieux qu'aujourd'hui nous parcourons en touristes aisés, guide et appareil photo en main, trop rarement seuls. Looking closely at the work produced by these four artists in Mexico, this book examines the vital role of exchanges between the expatriates and their Mexican contemporaries in forging a new photographic style. Monica Bravo offers fresh insights concerning Weston’s friendship with Diego Rivera; Modotti’s images of labor, which she published alongside the writings of the Stridentists; Strand’s engagement with folk themes and the work of composer Carlos Chávez; and the influence of Manuel Álvarez Bravo on Levitt’s contributions to a New World surrealism. Exploring how these dialogues resulted in a distinct kind of modernism characterized by inter-American interests, the book reveals the ways in which cross-border collaboration shaped a new "greater American" aesthetic.

Published in conjunction with the first major museum exhibition of Brazilian modernist photography outside of Brazil, ''Fotoclubismo'' presents the groundbreaking creative achievements of São Paulo’s Foto-Cine Clube Bandeirante, a group of amateur photographers founded in 1939 that is essentially unknown today to European and North American audiences. The vast majority of FCCB members pursued photography outside of their day jobs as lawyers, businessmen, accountants, journalists, engineers, biologists and bankers, but they were nonetheless quite serious about their artistic ambition. Their radical experimentations with process and form and their determination to distill inventive compositions from everyday life contributed to their esteemed reputation within an active international postwar scene—a status that has been all but forgotten.

Since the invention of photography, the family has been a constant subject of photographic observation, both in private photo albums and in artistic series. The group exhibition Family Affairs – Family in Current Photography, conceived by Ingo Taubhorn, curator of the Haus der Photographie, examines the current status of this traditional genre. A transcontinental selection of artistic projects from the last decade reveals both the diversity of photographic approaches and the heterogeneity of family models and complex dynamics. The catalog presents a wide variety of series and work groups and contextualizes the positions through comprehensive essays on various family themes in both photography and film, as well as within our society.
