Résumé:
Awoiska van der Molen has been producing monochrome landscape photography since 2009. ‘Blanco’ is the result of extended periods of isolation, during which the Dutch photographer penetrates deep into the essence of the remote world where she creates her images. Removed from today’s fast-paced society, she patiently experiences the landscape in a new way, moving beyond initial appearances to gradually uncover the identity of the place, allowing it to impress upon her its specific emotional and physical qualities. Through enigmatic contrasts between darkness and light in her large-format silver gelatin prints, notions of time and self blur, becoming non-existent.

Résumé:
Richly illustrated with etchings, manuscripts, and old documents, this book retraces the epic tale of the automaton from ancient times up to the present day. Wondrous objects that are at once scientific and magical, automata testify to the technical research and inventiveness of their designers. In 1675, the astronomer and mathematician Christian Huygens invented the spiral spring that would play a leading role in the development of smaller and more precise watches, with highly complex mechanisms. The creation of more complicated wheelwork and the use of extremely meticulous spiral springs gave free rein to clockmakers’ imaginations, who invented animated objects that fascinated philosophers and scientists alike. Doctors, thespians and thinkers of the modern world all saw these increasingly lifelike automata: wonderful simulacra of life. These articulated figurines were to inspire thought, science, literature, the performing arts and more. Continuing this tradition, the house of Van Cleef & Arpels has harnessed all of its designers’ talents to create an exceptional automaton: a fairy, whose movements celebrate the art of the inventors of past centuries. Immersed in its designer’s studio, the reader sees an automaton come to life. "Automata" is the most substantial survey of this popular topic currently available.

Résumé:
The starting point for this publication is the 1965 book ''New York Proclaimed'', which features an in-depth essay by V.S. Pritchett and photos by Evelyn Hofer (1922–2009), and which enjoyed great popularity upon its original publication. This newly conceived ''New York'' focuses on Hofer's photos of the 1960s as well as previously unpublished images from the early 1970s. In Hofer's photos of the street and (semi-) public spaces, people and architecture become symbols of a particular time and place. ''New York'' contains a new essay by John Haskell that posits possible stories behind Hofer's photos and draws connections between images taken over the course of ten years.

While celebrating the wide variety of shapes and sizes that nature and human cultivation have brought us, Schudel is no less fascinated by the process of decay. As the flowers fade, wilt, and wither, she transforms them under water into images of strange, compelling beauty, combining their delicate beauty with a stirring memento mori.

Résumé:
Born in Hungary in 1928, Gabor Szilasi is one of Quebec's best-known living photographers. Soon after settling in Montreal in 1959, Szilasi began photographing the many art openings that he regularly attended with his wife, artist Doreen Lindsay. Over the next two decades he produced an extensive photographic record of the individuals who comprised Montreal's visual arts community, a number of whom would shape the history of art in Canada. Expanding on a solo exhibition of Szilasi's photographs that took place at the McCord Museum in 2017, the book features three essays, an interview, and over one hundred images that capture, with characteristic candour, perspicacity, and wit, some of the radical changes that affected Montreal's art world throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Szilasi's significant body of work - totalling approximately 3,600 negatives - provides a rare look at the social lives of Canadian artists during a time of great effervescence and creative possibility.

'Prospecting Oceans' takes as its starting point an exhibition by the photographer and filmmaker Armin Linke, which was commissioned by TBA21–Academy, London, and first shown at the Institute of Marine Science (CNR-ISMAR) in Venice. Linke is concerned with making the invisible visible, and here he unmasks the technologies that enable extractions from the ocean, including future seabed mining for minerals and sampling of genetic data. But the book extends far beyond Linke's research, presenting the latest research from a variety of fields and employing art as the place where disciplines can converge. Integrating the work of artists with scientific, theoretical, and philosophical analysis, 'Prospecting Ocean' demonstrates that visual culture offers new and urgent perspectives on ecological crises.
