Résumé:
Making photographs as a way of "feeling at home without being at home." That’s how Gabriele Rossi describes the process that led to "The Lizard", his new monograph with Deadbeat Club. "I looked for the edge of the city, went to the shore at Rockaway, the houses, anything that could remind me of where I’m from," Rossi says. This approach drove him to consider his definition of "home" – the place where he could ultimately feel comfortable – and to return to the U.S. twice more to explore this compulsion across more than ten states in the Midwest and West. At the same time, he was interested in responding as an outsider to the structures of classic American photography, like that of Robert Adams. When the pandemic interrupted further travel, Rossi set about thinking through the pictures that he had amassed, trying to find common forms and themes – the connections that built the story about his being away from home. His effort was to understand why he was making the pictures, and not just to present a lot of pictures "about" America. As a result, "The Lizard" is a strange and uncanny atlas of the familiar transformed into the unfamiliar through the vision of a stranger who's only looking for some sort of home.

Ian Bates : Lost Dog

Résumé:
"Lost Dog" opens with a cat inquisitively turning towards us - a character inviting us to a vast land. And we can indeed speak of character, so much does "Lost Dog" resemble a fable. Throughout the pages, Bates is the solitary traveler on an odyssey, coming across with elusive figures, crossing depopulated places that, always, retain the mysterious traces of a past(...)

"Lost Dog" opens with a cat inquisitively turning towards us - a character inviting us to a vast land. And we can indeed speak of character, so much does "Lost Dog" resemble a fable. Throughout the pages, Bates is the solitary traveler on an odyssey, coming across with elusive figures, crossing depopulated places that, always, retain the mysterious traces of a past presence - wreckage landed on the branches of a dead tree, details of a forgotten domestic life, blood stains on immaculate snow... And sometimes, among the crystal-clear images, a tenderness emerges here and there, rays of warmth found in a woman's gaze or in a benevolent flame. Through valleys and mountains, Ian Bates offers with "Lost Dog" a portrait of a mysterious American North West, whose strangeness and magnificent solitude he captures like no other.

Résumé:
''Entangled'' encapsulates a pivotal moment for Arsenault’s work, representing a shift in perspective and personal responsibility. "After years dedicated to creating glorified images of women," she says of her success in fashion photography, "I came to question my role and influence in the transmission of models of femininity." Albeit informed by a progressive, non-binary upbringing, this introspection is ultimately necessary now – in the context of motherhood as she raises three children including a young woman. Arsenault calls the work "a poem, an ode, a shout out," and one senses that the quiet power of the book lies in contradictions still unresolved even as the author gains in experience and independence. “I feel often trapped in the person I have been trying to be my entire life,” she says in a touching and revealing statement, one that perfectly echoes the finely calibrated tensions and the tentative triumphs evoked in these pages.

Time passes; family life fractures and splinters with it. Surfaces crack under a varnish of quiet and soft tones, as folds and crevasses are mirrors of an inner, newly reappropriated body. ''Resurfacing'' is an essential extension of her work, translating the delicate and subdued power of her images into a tactile, textured design—giving amplitude and rhythm to Arsenault’s feminist visual language.

Vanessa Winship : Snow

Résumé:
In "Snow," Vanessa Winship’s latest monograph, we see that what’s not entirely comprehended is far more compelling than what is well understood. Perhaps that’s a truism, but it’s one that is rejuvenated and refreshed by each new and peculiar telling. This book is just such a revelation. The origins of "Snow" lie in a commission (this from an artist who very rarely works(...)

The origins of "Snow" lie in a commission (this from an artist who very rarely works on assignment, although Winship says she often approaches things "as if I have somehow been sent by someone"), but the photographer’s interest in what she found soon eclipsed anything that could properly be thought of as a "story." So she made repeated trips to a particular landscape – and, notably, a particular season – in order to fathom what it was that had disconcerted her in the initial making of these photographs.

A follow up to Ward Long's first monograph Summer Sublet (2020), "Standstil"l offers familiar interiors and neighborhood sights vibrating with a golden state glow. Friends have children, warm light pools on a park fence, and fireworks explode over an empty parking lot. Time cycles onward, yet these few small moments are caught in a spell of suspended grace. The carefully constructed sequence offers a kind of sunny purgatory, anticipating what may come. What’s on the other side?

From Lithuania, Ukraine, and Georgia to Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, photographer Ai Hoshino journeys throughout the former Soviet sphere of influence in northern Eurasia in her quest to document the bygone relics of a vast socialist state. This collection of photographs focuses on abandoned vehicles and other modes of transport that still remain in the former countries of the Soviet Union. These include cable cars, Ferris wheels, automobiles, railroads, airplanes, ships, tanks, trucks, and more. Although they will disappear into oblivion in the not too distant future, Hoshino captures these silent but eloquent inorganics in their final resting places.
