In the city of Tokyo, a building stands as an anachronism in relation to the surrounding urban landscape. The building in question is the Nakagin Capsule Tower designed by Kisho Kurokawa (1934 – 2007), one of the founders of an influential architectural movement in the 1960s called Metabolism. The movement’s aim was to formulate flexible designs that facilitate continual growth and renewal of architecture. As the first capsule apartment in history constructed for everyday use, the Nakagin Capsule Tower is considered the most ambitious attempt in implementing the principles of Metabolism. Kurokawa attached the building with 140 removable capsules to promote modifications to the structure over time, theoretically improving its capacity to adjust to the rapidly changing conditions of the post-industrial society. When the building first opened in March of 1972, it was advertised in the media to signal “the dawn of the capsule age.” At the time, Kurokawa had additional capsule projects planned in the coming years and predicted the mass production of these living unit. Noritaka Minami has been photographing the Nakagin Capsule Tower in Tokyo for the past four years.

Résumé:
The Romanian-born Canadian artist is well known for his richly-coloured, large-scale landscape paintings but less so for his photography. This publication fills that gap by featuring a selection of never before seen photographic work spanning four decades. Much like his paintings, autobiography is at the core of Krausz’s photographs in that they document the journeys of a relentless traveler. Both his photographs and paintings project entrancing worlds where the narrative of embattled and embittered histories are implied but never named.

This book by Swedish photographer Anders Erdström documents the garden and peripheral details: a sealed cardboard box, lingering on a sill, or the receding body of a workman. Hanezawa Garden was demolished by the real estate developer Mitsubishi Estate in 2012, despite countless attempts by local residence to preserve the house and gardens.

Résumé:
Carly Steinbrunn’s The Voyage of Discovery poses as the scientific report of a mission to discover and describe unknown worlds. The photographs present an inventory of findings, with an encyclopaedic curiosity reminiscent of the expeditionary narratives of James Cook and the travelogues of Claude Lévi-Strauss.Touching upon the realms of geography, botanics, anthropology and zoology, Steinbrunn’s body of work borrows from the varied approaches of the scientific register, and from the history of photography. Echoing Le Gray and Blossfeldt to evoke the aesthetic catalogue of photography’s own evolution, Steinbrunn also enfolds found images to question the transparency of the medium, where a photograph is simultaneously an index of reality and a fabrication.

Résumé:
This photobook tells the story of a society living through a recurring loop of violent outbursts, in which, time and again, life is shattered into pieces and reconstructed. Photographer Noa Ben-Shalom chooses not to picture the more obvious scenes of direct violence, instead bringing into focus the subtle way the apparently never-ending conflict between Israel and Palestine has permeated all aspects of life in the two regions – almost without being noticed. Through poignant personal correspondence (in English, Arabic, and Hebrew) and images gathered between 2000–2014, Ben-Shalom enables quiet introspection within a landscape in which the absurd has become the norm.
