Hiroshi Sugimoto turns his lens on Italy's architectural masterworks to create a meditation on the potential of cultural exchange and the possibility of cultural fusion. In 1585, four Japanese youths appeared before Pope Gregory XIII, summoned to his court from the nascent Christian community in Japan to present themselves at the capital of their faith. Sugimoto follows in the boys' footsteps, capturing the architectural wonders of Rome, Florence, and Venice. Sugimoto's images present each chapel and theater as a marvel, imposing and dark. He contextualizes his photographs with Japanese works from the period and the decades that follow. These panels and objects attest to the impact of Western culture, specifically Jesuit Christianity, on Momoyama and Edo aesthetics as Japanese artists envisioned scenes of European life.

Résumé:
Photographer Takashi Homma began producing a series of books as an homage to Edward Ruscha in 2014, with each publication taking a new form through its changing subject matter. While the technique is an imitation of Ruscha’s 1964 book ‘Various Small Fires’, this fifth instalment in the series attempts its own adaption of the original by focusing on a theme not examined by Ruscha. Thus we are presented with all manner of hoses, but mostly garden hoses, looping and snaking randomly as they were abandoned after the last use. Also, as the title suggests, one of the hoses is actually a snake

A documentary photographer by trade, it was only after moving to Japan that he taught himself how to photograph architecture. His desire to capture the tiny streets of Tokyo led to a personal project where he sought out the most interesting and surprising contemporary houses in the city’s residential neighbourhoods. He spent four years making images of these hidden architectural gems by a range of architects, including firms like Atelier Bow Wow, Go Hasegawa, Sou Fujimoto Architects, Shigeru Ban, and ALX. Includes an interview with Japanese architect Kengo Kuma.

Résumé:
In his works of art the Korean photographer Han Sungpil confronts the themes of environment, energy production, and humankind’s impact on nature. The three series in this book of photographs are distinguished by their surprising perspective, which goes beyond the visual vocabulary normally found in environmental documentations. Whether it’s a painterly French landscape featuring nuclear power plants, presented as a scene of idyllic perfection, or a search for the relics of whale hunting and coal mining in the Arctic and Antarctic, Sungpil’s photographs tell, artfully and critically, of nature’s sublimity and humankind’s overexploitation of it. Photographs of abandoned trawlers, whaling stations, and industrial ruins set in front of monumental, ice-covered landscapes shift the focus to the exploitation of ecological resources, leaving the viewer speechless. Sungpil was awarded the Ilwoo Foundation’s prize for his moving works of art.

Résumé:
Michael Kenna is regarded as one of the most accomplished photographers working today. This book charts Kenna’s work in the field of architectural photography, showing how his approach to the built environment informs his style, whether he’s capturing natural or human-made structures. The book creates dialogs between images to show how Kenna applies light, shadow, composition, and perspective to similar effect in different settings. Yvonne Meyer-Lohr’s astute curatorial approach helps us understand how deftly Kenna moves between techniques, whether he is capturing the network of cables on a suspension bridge, the glittering jewels of a nighttime cityscape, or the haunting silhouette of a factory tower. Accompanied by texts by Meyer-Lohr.
