Résumé:
Otto Wagner is considered as the "father of the Viennese modernism" and one of the most important international architects. The publication on the MAK exhibition illustrates the resonance of Wagner's oeuvre by protagonists of early modernism as well as his influence on his contemporaries, students and subsequent generations of architects and designers such as Josef Hoffmann, Joze Plecnik, Leopold Bauer, Rudolph M. Schindler, Frank Lloyd Wright, Auguste Perret, Frei Otto, Aldo Rossi and Robert Venturi/Denise Scott Brown. With generous and often unknown image material the book illustrates Wagner's influence on international architecture from the turn of the century to the present, and thus a link between the intricate relationship of modernism and postmodernism.

Résumé:
Whatever 'ugliness' is, it remains a problematic category in architectural aesthetics - alternately vilified and appropriated, either to shock or to invert conventions of architecture. This book presents eighteen new essays which rethink ugliness in architecture - from brutalism to eclectic postmodern architectural productions - and together offer a diverse reappraisal of the history and theory of postmodern architecture and design. The essays address both broad theoretical questions on ugliness and postmodern aesthetics, as well as more specific analyses of significant architectural examples dating from the last decades of the twentieth century, addressing the relation between the aesthetic register of ugliness and aesthetic concepts such as brutalism, kitsch, the formless, ad hoc-ism, the monstrous, or the grotesque. "Architecture and ugliness" not only documents the history of a postmodern anti-aesthetic through a diverse set of case studies, it also sheds valuable light on an aesthetic problem which has been largely overlooked in architectural discourse. It is essential reading for all students and scholars with an interest in postmodern architectural history, architectural theory and aesthetics.

Résumé:
The neo-avant-garde and postmodern movements have long been understood in terms of their re-working of modernism and a narrative emphasizing rupture and new beginnings. Compelling continuities between the two, especially in postwar Britain, suggest that a new account is needed. This collection of provocative essays discusses the work of architects and their associates, including Alice and Peter Smithson, Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, James Stirling, James Gowan, Eduardo Paolozzi, Leon Krier, Allan Greenberg, Reyner Banham, and Charles Jencks, and explores why the debate over postwar modernism was especially vocal in Britain.

Résumé:
The reader reprints extracts of key historical texts – those of Daniel Bell on the post-industrial society and Jean-François Lyotard on the post-modern condition. The new cultural logic of contested pluralism is analysed in seminal papers by Andreas Hyssen and Jim Collins. The fundamental ideas on post-modern literature are defined by Umberto Eco, John Barth and David Lodge and the theories they present challenge the notion of post-modernism as an ultra avant-garde movement and the expression of a consumer society. For this second edition of the book, Charles Jencks presents a new overview of the Post-Modern, reflecting its maturity as a movement.

Résumé:
In The Story of Post-Modernism , Charles Jencks, the authority on Post-Modern architecture and culture, provides the defining account of Post-Modern architecture from its earliest roots in the early 60s to the present day. By breaking the narrative into seven distinct chapters, which are both chronological and overlapping, Jencks charts the ebb and flow of the movement, the peaks and troughs of different ideas and themes. The book is highly visual. As well as providing a chronological account of the movement, each chapter also has a special feature on the major works of a given period. The first up-to-date narrative of Post-Modern Architecture - other major books on the subject were written 20 years ago.An accessible narrative that will appeal to students who are new to the subject, as well as those who can remember its heyday in the 70s and 80s.
