Fifty years ago, in 1968, barricades were erected in the streets of Paris for the first time since the Paris Commune of nearly one hundred years before. The events of May 1968 began with student protests against the Vietnam War and American imperialism, expanded to rebellion over student living conditions and resistance to capitalist consumerism. An uprising at the Sorbonne was followed by wildcat strikes across France, uniting students and workers and bringing the country's economy to a halt. There have been many accounts of these events. This book tells the story in a different way, through the graffiti inscribed by protestors as they protested.

Risograph is a brand of digital duplicators that are designed mainly for high-volume photocopying and printing. The process creates micro-imperfections in printing, similar to spontaneity, or even comparable to how improvisation in jazz can lead to an unexpected but pleasant result. The result of two years of research by O.OO, a graphic design studio based in Taipei, the main focus of this publication is colour separation and experimentation with images. The studio does not claim the colour separation methods described here to be absolute or the “right” way, but offer resources in hopes that they can provide helpful advice in practice while on the path to professionalism in this field.

Résumé:
Marking the centenary of his birth, the "Poster Collection" series devotes its latest edition to the popular Swiss poster designer Herbert Leupin. Primarily conceiving posters for consumer goods, for many years Leupin created advertising for products as diverse as the soft drink Pepita, charcuterie from Grossmetzgerei Bell, and Roth-Handle cigarettes. He helped these and many other companies develop their own brand identity and a recognizable presence in public space. In doing so, he struck the right balance between old-school artist's posters and a methodology for a successful publicity strategy - and thus bridged the increasingly wide divide between art, graphic design, and advertising.

Résumé:
The Russian Revolution has been examined countless times, but never from the perspective of postcards. This book is an extraordinary visual record of the tumultuous events of the 1905, the Menshevik, and Bolshevik Revolutions. The postcards capture the imperial splendour of the royal family in their final years, the mood of revolution as the crowds took to the streets, and the sens of optimism that greeted the new regime. They also reveal a very personal quality: in a cart sent by the Grand Duchess Olga from the house where the royal family was imprisoned shortly before their murder in Ekaterinburg, and a snapshot of Lenin chatting informally with the author H.G. Wells. This book is a unique contribution to the visual history of the Russian Revolution and brings to life one of the defining events of the twentieth century.

Résumé:
In Miniature Messages, Jack Child analyzes Latin American postage stamps, revealing the messages about history, culture, and politics encoded in their design and disseminated throughout the world. While postage stamps are a sanctioned product of official government agencies, Child argues that they accumulate popular cultural value and take on new meanings as they circulate in the public sphere. As he demonstrates in this richly illustrated study, the postage stamp conveys many of the contestations and triumphs of Latin American history. Child combines history and political science with philatelic research of nearly forty thousand Latin American stamps. He focuses on Argentina and the Southern Cone, highlighting stamps representing the consolidation of the Argentine republic and those produced under its Peronist regime. He compares Chilean stamps issued by the leftist government of Salvador Allende and by Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship. Considering postage stamps produced under other dictatorial regimes, he examines stamps from the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Paraguay. Child studies how international conflicts have been depicted on the stamps of Argentina, Chile, and Peru, and he pays particular attention to the role of South American and British stamps in establishing claims to the Malvinas/Falkland Islands and to Antarctica. He also covers the cultural and political history of stamps in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Grenada, Mexico, Uruguay, Venezuela and elsewhere. In Miniature Messages, Child finds the political history of modern Latin America in its “tiny posters.” Jack Child is a professor in the Department of Language and Foreign Studies at American University in Washington. He is the author of many books and articles on Latin American culture, translation, and geopolitics.

Street art has taken over the world in recent years. Cities have been "liberated" by artists who are as motivated by the drive to invent new forms of media as they are to create new images. Art of Rebellion features the broadest possible variety of street art including flyers, stickers, spraycan and stencil art, and a host of interesting hybrids that fall somewhere in between. Provocateurs such as Space Invader, Above, Lefunk, Milk, Fume, Hoernchen and East Eric use an amazing variety of techniques to create their own individual iconography in projects as crazy as bathrooms painted gold, battle tanks painted pink and cities plastered with pictures of toasters.
