The Montre´al-based Canadian artist and architect Melvin Charney describes the history of modern architecture as a series of significant monuments that have been reproduced and documented. Here, the unexpected events transmitted by wire-service news photographs—selected, classified into various thematic areas, and collated by Charney—confront us with the shock or recognition that allows us to see architecture from outside its presentation as an isolated monument. The choices made by Charney from the ideas enclosed in the pre-packaged “news” images order them into a “dictionary,” and show the built and inhabited world as it appears through journalistic information. This publication accompanied the Canadian entry to the Venice Biennale’s 7th International Architecture Exhibition, whose theme was “The City: Less Aesthetics, More Ethics.”

Résumé:
Shaping the Great City looks at modern architecture and the city in a vast geographical area over nearly fifty years of tumultuous social and political change, bringing to light architectural developments that are only now emerging as subjects for international inquiry. How did modern architecture construct “meaning” in relation to the complex cultural traditions, conflicting political agendas, and historical narratives of modernizing urban society in the cities of central Europe? What role did the cities themselves—as the principal arenas of public culture in the multinational, polyethnic, and pluricultural Hapsburg Empire, then in the successor republics—play in the evolution of modern architectural culture? These questions remain pertinent to the current relationship between cities and the increasingly diverse cultures within them, and to the role of the great city today in the age of globalization.

Résumé:
Cedric Price Works 1952-2003: A Forward-Minded Retrospective by Samantha Hardingham is a two-volume anthology, co-published by the Architectural Association (AA) and the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), and is supported by the Graham Foundation and the Cedric Price Estate. The books bring together for the first time all of the projects, articles and talks of British architect Cedric Price, aiming to present his munificence as thinker, philosopher and designer. A student at the AA in the 1950s, Price established his office in London in 1960 and went on to produce some of architecture's most intensely imaginative and experimental projects of the latter half of the 20th century. His work is central in defining architectural discourse around the emerging postwar themes of mobility and indeterminacy in design. 2 Volumes in a custom-made slipcase, 912 pages and 512 pages respectively. 1,255 colour and b illustrations.

Résumé:
This book pursues the legendary but elusive 1974 exhibition, Anarchitecture. Conceived of as an anonymous, photographic statement about the intersection of art and building by the research collective Anarchitecture Group, the exhibition is a constant reference point in discussion, regardless of the almost complete lack of evidence about it. Contrasting the hyper-visibility of Anarchitecture Group’s leader, Gordon Matta-Clark, and his canonical work, SPLITTING, with the near invisibility of Anarchitecture, this book takes various Matta-Clark archives, including the CCA’s holdings, as its point of departure and follows the traces of the exhibition. Formulated as a detective story, Cutting Matta-Clark: The Anarchitecture Investigation assembles a comprehensive dossier of previously unpublished evidence including photographs, loose-leaf documents, and notecards, as well as interviews with protagonists of the Anarchitecture Group.

Résumé:
Born out of the Portuguese revolution of 1974, the Serviço Ambulatório de Apoio Local (SAAL) was one of the most compelling processes in 20th-century architecture. A pioneering experiment in Europe, it set up technical teams led by architects who, in collaboration with the local population, tried to address the urgent housing needs of communities across the nation. The teams were reinventing architectural practice, from surveying living conditions to monitoring land expropriation, designing projects with the residents directly. This volume includes new essays along with historic texts, an interview with some of the major figures involved, and extensive project documentation. An exhibition by the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves, The SAAL Process will be presented at the CCA in Spring 2015.

Résumé:
Iñaki Ábalos and Juan Herreros established the renowned architectural firm Ábalos & Herreros in Madrid in 1984. At the time, following the end of the Franco regime, architects were valued more for their technical ability than for their contributions to theoretical research. In this context, Ábalos and Herreros’s melding of design with a range of publications and curatorial projects presented a remarkable challenge to assumptions about the role of an architect. In 2012, the Canadian Centre for Architecture obtained the Ábalos & Herreros archive, which contains documents related to more than 160 projects. The material comprises sketches, slides, models, collages, and drawings. The archive presents a compelling opportunity to reconstruct Ábalos and Herreros’s planning and design process. Each of the book’s three contributors—two of whom worked with Ábalos and Herreros—approaches the archive with specific questions, and their essays explore topics including the architects’ fascination with industrial architecture, their capacity to construct a hybrid materiality without recourse to building technology as language, and their innovative visions for landscape architecture.

Internationally renowned and award-winning historian Dr. Robert Jan van Pelt's 'The Evidence Room' is a chilling exploration of the role architecture played in constructing Auschwitz-arguably the Nazis' most horrifying facility. 'The Evidence Room' is both a companion piece to, and an elaboration of, the upcoming exhibit at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale and at the Canadian Center for Architecture, based on van Pelt's authoritative testimony against Holocaust denial in a 2000 libel suit argued before the Royal Courts of Justice in London.
