This book documents two complementary urban realities that have played a fundamental role in the imagination, definition and redefinition of the twentieth-century modern city. Shifting away from an understanding of architecture as the construction of monumental masterpieces, the texts collected here assemble the narratives behind the public spaces, housing and social facilities in these two cities, where modern plans have proven unexpectedly resilient and adaptable over time. This perspective is reinforced through visual contributions by Yto Barrada and Takashi Homma—two photographers especially invested in capturing everyday urban life. In a world marked by decolonization and Cold War politics, Casablanca and Chandigarh appear simultaneously as exponents of and countercurrents to modernization and its development perspectives. The book’s three chapters set the context for reading Casablanca and Chandigarh as the results of nuanced, dynamic processes of international exchange driven by the engagement and expertise of a new class of design professionals. As a dossier of actors, alignments and agendas, the book contributes to an alternative historiography of post-war urbanism and to recent reflections on the impact of transnational practice.

Archaeology of the Digital delves into the genesis and establishment of digital tools for design conceptualization, visualization, and production at the end of the 1980s. How was the transition from analog practices to new digital tools managed, and the dialogue between them exploited? What was the cultural and technological landscape of that moment? These questions are at the foundation of this publication and its accompanying exhibition that unfold around four projects selected as seminal moments in the early development stages of digital architecture: Frank Gehry’s Lewis Residence (1989 –1995), Peter Eisenman’s Frankfurt Biozentrum (1987), Shoei Yoh’s design of the roof structure of Odawara Municipal Sports Complex and of Galaxy Toyama Gymnasium (1990 –1992) and Chuck Hoberman’s Expanding Sphere (1991) and Iris Dome (1994). Each project established a significant direction for architectural research by experimenting with the possibilities offered by novel digital tools. The dialogue between computer sciences, architecture and engineering is at the core of these experiments, which can be considered precursors of approaches still operative today.

Embedded in politically and economically charged sites in the Pearl River Delta, Mongolia, and the European Union, 51N4E (Johan Anrys and Freek Persyn) and Rural Urban Framework (Joshua Bolchover and John Lin) operate in expanded ecologies of architectural practice, questioning the role of the architect today. By collaborating with policymakers, local contractors, and NGOs, and by engaging their respective labs at ETH Zu¨rich and the University of Hong Kong as key research locations, both offices investigate new forms of cooperation and dialogue as crucial strategies for design. 51N4E and RUF work at the seams of urbanization, with projects situated in transitional settlements in Ulaanbaatar, the rural regions of China, the transforming neighborhoods of Brussels, and Albania’s shifting public spaces. This publication compares their research and design processes in order to question the extents and certainties of architecture against backdrops of indeterminate notions of citizenship, unstable stages of urbanization, and insecure economies and ecologies.

Conçu dans le cadre du projet annuel Ressaisir la vie, le livre Une portion du présent vise à rétablir un dialogue entre l’architecture et la société, lequel permettrait à la première de commencer à composer et à traiter avec nos normes sociales modifiées et fluctuantes. Cette publication est une réflexion sur de nouveaux comportements, rituels, valeurs et sur leurs implications spatiales. Elle cherche à catalyser des interventions urbaines et architecturales qui concilient, influencent et, dans certains cas, anticipent nos réalités vécues d’aujourd’hui. Les auteurs abordent des sujets qui vont de la sécurité des espaces numériques à la façon dont les trajectoires de vie normatives touchent les personnes âgées et les nombreuses expressions du soi mises de l’avant par chacun d’entre nous, ainsi que la manière dont les architectes créent des contextes pour des espaces destinés à des familles recomposées, des retraités de trente ans et des monuments contestés, entre autres. Quand le numérique marque-t-il l’architecture? Quelles sont les conditions ayant poussé les architectes à intégrer des outils numériques à leur pratique? Tout au long du programme de recherche Archéologie du numérique, le CCA a recueilli les documents d’archives de vingt-cinq projets réalisés entre la fin des années 1980 et le début des années 2000 afin de comprendre cette période en tant qu’origine du numérique. Cependant, dès lors que l’on définit le numérique comme un état rendu possible par les fondements conceptuels des médias numériques et non nécessairement par ces médias eux-mêmes, les contours de ce moment numérique – la date et les circonstances de son commencement – deviennent moins clairs. Il existe huit millions d’histoires des origines du numérique en architecture. Ce livre rassemble quatorze d’entre elles pour former une chronologie des réponses à la question suivante : « Quand le numérique marque-t-il l’architecture? » Les propos présentés ici offrent une analyse des changements particuliers qu’a subis la pensée de l’architecture, du bâti et de la ville, ainsi que des déplacements technologiques qui ont résulté de cette évolution. Cet ouvrage marque ainsi tout à la fois le point final du programme Archéologie du numérique, et une ouverture vers de nouveaux horizons autour du numérique en architecture. Et si le fait de poser la question « Quand le numérique marque-t-il l’architecture? » peut susciter en réponse huit millions d’histoires, alors on imagine aisément qu’elle pourrait aussi engendrer huit millions de digressions et de ramifications, dont chacune explorerait des cas différents ou des géographies singulières – comme une sorte de Tristram Shandy du numérique, qui se développerait à mesure que le CCA continuerait de construire ses archives numériques et de les rendre toujours plus accessibles aux chercheurs. Un tel roman de digressions pourrait fournir la matière de futurs projets de recherche et se prolonger dans l’étude de nouvelles archives, pour le plus grand plaisir des lecteurs.
