Résumé:
Imagine the world without the Parthenon, Notre Dame, the Wailing Wall, the Taj Mahal, the Forbidden City, Machu Picchu, or other iconic buildings, monuments, and places. What if the more impressive historic buildings and sites we encounter in our everyday lives disappeared? Civilization would simply not exist as we know it. Fortunately, awareness of the importance of protecting the world's cultural patrimony—in particular, its architectural heritage—is at an all-time high and is growing. Time Honored: A Global View of Architectural Conservation explores the reasons for this phenomenon, explains how international architectural heritage conservation practice operates, and considers where this firmly rooted global interest may lead. Written by a leading practitioner and teacher of architectural preservation, Time Honored provides a much-needed comprehensive and balanced survey of the practice, theory, and structure of architectural heritage conservation throughout the world.

In this guide, a building is considered to have become a ruin when its windows or doors are no longer intact or when walls or roofs have holes. These ruins and abandoned buildings have no use, no function. In a country like the Netherlands, in which every inch of land seems to be used with the utmost efficiency, the existence of these blank spaces is something to be grateful for.

Résumé:
Many of the stately greystones that line Chicago’s streets and boulevards have fallen into disrepair, but there is now a movement afoot to renovate these beautiful historic structures. Three experts in the field of Chicago housing and architecture now offer an accessible guide to properly renovating the Chicago greystone. In clear and comprehensive chapters, the authors explain the technical aspects of inspecting, maintaining, and restoring a greystone home. They outline four levels of building restoration conditions—Maintainer, Fixer-Upper, Rehabber, and Total Gut—and chart the step-by-step renovation procedures for each level of restoration. The book effectively educates greystone owners on restoration methods that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, financially sustainable, and historically aware. The Historic Chicago Greystone provides an essential and unparalleled guide to the maintenance and restoration of these treasured Chicago dwellings.

Every day, millions of people enter old buildings, pass monuments, and gaze at landscapes unaware that these acts are possible only thanks to the preservation movement. As we approach the October 2016 anniversary of the United States National Historic Preservation Act, historian Max Page offers a thoughtful assessment of the movement’s past and charts a path toward a more progressive future. Page argues that if preservation is to play a central role in building more-just communities, it must transform itself to stand against gentrification, work more closely with the environmental sustainability movement, and challenge societies to confront their pasts. Touching on the history of the preservation movement in the United States and ranging the world, Page searches for inspiration on how to rejuvenate historic preservation for the next fifty years. This illuminating work will be widely read by urban planners, historians, and anyone with a stake in the past.

Résumé:
In contrast to tabula rasa urbanism, this book considers strategies for tabula plena?urban sites that are full of existing buildings of multiple time periods. Such dense sites prompt designers to work between the fields of architecture, historic preservation, and urban planning, developing methods for collaborative authorship and interlocking architectural forms. The book grew from a collaboration between the Oslo School of Architecture and Design and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation on the planning of the government quarter in Oslo. Emerging from this process, the book asks larger questions about how we practice, teach, and theorize engagement with existing architecture on an urban scale. It contains a compilation of short essays addressing theoretical questions, a sampling of design projects offering different formal strategies for architectural design, and a series of discussions about pedagogical strategies.
