Résumé:
This issue of El Croquis features the work of Arno Brandlhuber. The Berlin-based architect is known for his various collaborative practices involving an array of people – architects, artists, writers, filmmakers, musicians – and an oeuvre rich in cultural references. Brandlhuber stands for a discursive practice; he brings together individuals who represent the new creative class which has become increasingly crucial for cities everywhere, and he believes in their ability to develop new, more diverse and flexible lifestyles. This special issue includes essays by Bart Lootsma and Moritz Küng, and features a selection of 20 exemplary projects.

Art is long, life is short, goes the aphorism. That leaves out a third player: the planet lasts longest of all, and treats human life and human art with equal disregard.

We live in extremely uncertain times. Our faith in the future is increasingly?tested. Far from being a hopeful, utopian domain, the future now seems doubtful. But what does it mean to doubt today? Societal levels of anxiety are rising. Insecurity is now a generalised condition. Concern that civilisation itself is on the brink of some cataclysmic change is ubiquitous. And yet, doubting doubt – through the scientific method, imperial evidence and systemic thought – has not only created modernity, but offers the only hope to our worry.

Résumé:
The challenges to our species have never been more obvious, yet the required actions have never seemed more impossible. After several decades, Just-in-Time production (only making what you need, only when you need it) has become a generalised model. We now expect everything on demand, from clothing to houses, and food to friends. The unreal magic by which objects come into being has also changed our relationship with the process of making. Increasingly, we are more interested in the how than the what, with even inferior artisanal and bespoke commanding a premium. Will we be able to redress social inequality, dampen the effects of global warming and reinvent democracy just in time?

Résumé:
This issue of "Harvard Design Magazine" treks into the woods to come to terms with its precarious status as habitat and resource, and to challenge assumptions about wood as material. We won’t be “out of the woods”—this looping conundrum—any time soon, even if the woods as we once knew it, and might still imagine it, has ceased to exist. At the intersection of wilderness, urbanization, and myth, “Into the Woods” embraces contradiction, challenges destruction, and revisits our roots, biological and architectural alike.
