Résumé:
From Google reviews to YouTube tutorials, and from online service desks to real-life ‘may I speak to the manager’ requests - we are all critics of our designed environment. It seems therefore strange, if not outrageous, that design criticism is a practice considered to be a haute-for-few instead of a low-for-all. Design belongs to all of us and, therefore, its criticism as well. How can we activate more people to become actively aware of and critical towards their designed environments?

Résumé:
Drawing on fifteen years of field research in Las Vegas, anthropologist Natasha Dow Schüll shows how the mechanical rhythm of electronic gambling pulls players into a trancelike state they call the "machine zone," in which daily worries, social demands, and even bodily awareness fade away. Once in the zone, gambling addicts play not to win but simply to keep playing, for as long as possible?even at the cost of physical and economic exhaustion. In continuous machine play, gamblers seek to lose themselves while the gambling industry seeks profit. Schüll describes the strategic calculations behind game algorithms and machine ergonomics, casino architecture and "ambience management," player tracking and cash access systems?all designed to meet the market's desire for maximum "time on device." Her account moves from casino floors into gamblers' everyday lives, from gambling industry conventions and Gamblers Anonymous meetings to regulatory debates over whether addiction to gambling machines stems from the consumer, the product, or the interplay between the two. ''Addiction by design'' is a compelling inquiry into the intensifying traffic between people and machines of chance, offering clues to some of the broader anxieties and predicaments of contemporary life. At stake in Schüll's account of the intensifying traffic between people and machines of chance is a blurring of the line between design and experience, profit and loss, control and compulsion.

Résumé:
This book critically investigates our contemporary time crisis. The transformation of society from an agrarian to an industrial, and finally an urbanized way of living and working has created a fundamental change in our understanding of time: a 24/7 mentality. The move from natural time to the digital age leads to a fragmentation of time that deeply affects our daily biological and social rhythm. We need a new approach to time to overcome our temporal system of clocks and calendars. This book investigates a new perception of time by exploring the concept of uchronia, a term derived from the Greek u-topos and meaning 'no time' or 'non-time'. Uchronia is a way of questioning, speculating on and designing new kinds of temporal systems that are more about being in tune than on time.

Design Anthropology brings together a unique range of cutting-edge design theorists and social scientists to explore the changing object culture of the 21st century. Decades ago, product designers utilised basic market research to fine-tune their designs for consumer success today the design process has been radically transformed; the user is now centre-stage in the design process. From design ethnography to cultural probing, innovative designers in the 21st century are relying on anthropological methods to illicit the meaning, rather than the mere form and function of stuff.

Résumé:
The environmental impact of interior architecture and design practice is immense. This book highlights the need for designers to adapt the way they work and relearn lessons that have been lost. Contrary to many preconceptions, sustainable design can be sophisticated and stylish. And by its nature, a sustainable approach means considering the whole life cycle of a project and therefore improving the functionality, quality, human enjoyment and, in the long term, bringing real social and economic benefits. This book has examples, techniques, and historical and contemporary case studies, all supported by useful resources and links. A comprehensive reference book for anyone wanting to work in this area, Sian Moxon aims to introduce these ideas to design students while they are formulating their understanding of the industry, encouraging and inspiring them with positive, creative and practical alternatives.

How do contemporary design practices engage with political and societal issues? Can design realize ideas that lead to significant change? Where would the change happen: in the design studio, on the factory floor, in exhibition settings or on the street? Some of the design world’s greatest practitioners, including architects, came together for a multi-faceted, three-year project sponsored by Iaspis. This book, the project’s culmination, comprises texts, interviews, drawings and other artwork in three sections: WHAT brings together contemporary and historical writings; HOW analyzes common issues and emerging tactics within socially and politically engaged design; and WHERE offers a broad perspective on new forms of design practice. Featuring facsimiles of 36 projects from the Design Act archive, this rich book is a must-have for designers who care about their role in the wider world.
