Résumé:
This publication is the result of a year-long dialogue between British architect David Chipperfield (born 1953) and Swiss architect Simon Kretz (born 1982). The two began working together through the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, in which Chipperfield mentored the younger architect for a year. This publication focuses on a single aspect of their conversations—the problems and possibilities of planning. "On Planning" aims to intervene in the future of urban development, offering a manifesto for a relational, collective and diverse future for our cities. Using the Bishopsgate goods yard site in East London as a case study, Chipperfield and Kretz explore the conditions under which an ideal urban development project could flourish. The conclusions reached through this exercise demonstrate how future large-scale developments elsewhere could have more positive urban impact, both at the scale of the neighborhood and the wider metropolis.

"City of Play" shows how play is built into the very fabric of the modern city. From playgrounds to theme parks, skittle alleys to swimming pools, to the countless uncontrolled spaces which the urban habitat affords play is by no means just a childhood affair. A myriad essentially unproductive playful pursuits have, through time, modelled the modern city and landscape. Architect and scholar Rodrigo Pérez de Arces erudite, original, and often surprising study explores a curiously neglected dimension of architectural design and practice: ludic space. It is an architectural history of the playground from the hippodrome to the Situationist city of space released from productive ends in the pursuit of leisure. The ludic imagination impregnated modernist ideals, and what begins with the playground ends with a re-consideration of the whole sweep of the modern movement through the filter of leisure and play.

A folly may be described as an architectural scherzo, a visually provocative, poetical structure without a specific function.

Résumé:
For millennia, the city stood out against the landscape, walled and compact. This concept of the city was long accepted as adequate for characterizing the urban experience. However, the nature of the city, both real and imagined, has always been more permeable than this model reveals. The essays in Urban Imaginaries respond to this condition by focusing on how social and physical space is conceived as both indefinite and singular. They emphasize the ways this space is shared and thus made into urban culture. Urban Imaginaries offers case studies on cities in Brazil, Israel, Turkey, Lebanon, and India, as well as in the United States and France, and in doing so blends social, cultural, and political approaches to better understand the contemporary urban experience. Alev Çinar is associate professor of political science and public administration at Bilkent University, Turkey and Thomas Bender is university professor of the humanities and history at New York University.

Résumé:
Sarah Schrank in this book places the celebrated arrival of LA in the richer context of art controversies and political contests over modern art and art spaces in the twentieth century. Challenging historical accounts that situate the city's origins as an art center in the 1960s, she argues that debates over modernism among artists and civic leaders alike made art a charged political site as early as the 1910s. The legacy of those early battles reverberated throughout the century. Because of a rich tradition of arts education and the presence of Hollywood, Los Angeles historically hosted a talented population of contemporary artists. However, because of the snug relationship between urban aesthetics and capital investment that underscored the booster goals of the civic arts movement, modern artists were pushed out of public exhibition spaces until after World War II.
