A partir des années 1950, en France comme en Italie mais avec un certain décalage, sur les territoires agricoles extérieurs aux noyaux urbains et à la ville concentrée, une forte augmentation de ces urbanisations discontinues et éparpillées s'est manifestée. Le livre de Chiara Barattucci s'attache à comprendre en particulier comment s'est opérée, dans les deux pays, la dispersion d'une grande quantité de maisons individuelles, dans des formes hétérogènes tant du point de vue physique que social. C'est bien la composante proprement résidentielle de ces urbanisations dispersées qui est au centre de la comparaison, tant pour ce qui est de la terminologie qui la désigne que du mode d'intervention d'urbanisme qui y est à l'œuvre. L'hypothèse centrale du présent ouvrage est que le rapport images interprétatives/actions d'urbanisme est fondamental pour comprendre la logique des acteurs et renouveler les stratégies d'intervention. Cette grille de lecture est appliquée aussi aux documents d'urbanisme de deux agglomérations : celle de Rennes pour la France et celle de Lecce pour l'Italie. L'objectif majeur du livre de Chiara Barattucci est au final de contribuer à une meilleure compréhension des urbanisations dispersées, afin d'orienter les stratégies d'intervention vers des restructurations urbaines et territoriales cohérentes, qui soient capables de prendre en compte l'urbanisation dispersée existante comme composante du territoire urbain d'aujourd'hui.

Tout y est fait pour assurer la défense de la propriété des objets, des êtres, des moyens de production, des niveaux hiérarchiques. La destruction progressive de l'environnement et la disparition de l'espèce humaine auxquelle peut aboutir ce type de comportement de puissance fonderont peut-être la grande crainte qui conduira l'homme à transformer par cela même la finalité des groupes sociaux au seul «profit» de l'espèce humaine. Leap into the City counters this sad reality with intelligence from artists, theoreticians, journalists and other cultural actors, all of whom start from the conviction that art and culture form the vital center of a society. In essays and reportage, in literary texts and artistic contributions, they take positions on current issues, pose new questions, and so portray a subjective tableau of their cities, the cultural scenes, and the public realms.~Seven cities are presented in as many chapters. Each begins with a specific artistic work, and each concludes with an essay whose theme points beyond the local context. How are the new elites facing up to the wars of the recent past and their consequences? Who is bringing the Communist era to the museum? How is the European Union securing its external borders, and who is the Protectorate in the former Yugoslavia actually protecting? The publication provides insights into a European present that is determined by numerous factors and yet has at least three things in common: a Socialist past, the experience of radical social reconstruction and the task of establishing a democratic political culture.

Through a careful read of such factors as home ownership, housing quality, and neighborhood rates of crime, welfare enrollment, teenage pregnancy, and educational achievement, Emily Rosenbaum and Samantha Friedman provide a detailed portrait of neighborhood life and socio-economic status for the immigrants of New York. The book paints an important, if disturbing, picture. The authors argue that not only are Blacks—regardless of generation—disadvantaged relative to members of other racial/ethnic groups in their ability to obtain housing in high-quality neighborhoods, but that housing and neighborhood conditions actually decline over generations. Rosenbaum and Friedman's findings suggest that the future of racial inequality in this country will increasingly isolate Blacks from all other groups. In other words, the "color line" may be shifting from a line separating Blacks from Whites to one separating Blacks from all non-Blacks.

The shift in the ideological winds toward a "free-market" economy has brought profound effects in urban areas. "The neoliberal city" presents an overview of the effect of these changes on today's cities. The term "neoliberalism" was originally used in reference to a set of practices that first-world institutions like the IMF and World Bank impose on third-world countries and cities. The support of unimpeded trade and individual freedoms and the discouragement of state regulation and social spending are the putative centerpieces of this vision. More and more, though, people have come to recognize that first-world cities are undergoing the same processes. In "The neoliberal city", Jason Hackworth argues that neoliberal policies are in fact having a profound effect on the nature and direction of urbanization in the United States and other wealthy countries, and that much can be learned from studying its effect. He explores the impact that neoliberalism has had on three aspects of urbanization in the United States: governance, urban form, and social movements. The American inner city is seen as a crucial battle zone for the wider neoliberal transition primarily because it embodies neoliberalism's antithesis, Keynesian egalitarian liberalism. Focusing on issues such as gentrification in New York City; public-housing policy in New York, Chicago, and Seattle; downtown redevelopment in Phoenix; and urban-landscape change in New Brunswick, N.J., Hackworth shows us how material and symbolic changes to institutions, neighborhoods, and entire urban regions can be traced in part to the rise of neoliberalism.

Side by side with these representatives of a century of ethnic succession are the newcomers: Maria, an undocumented Mexican; Mohamed, a West African entrepreneur; Si Zhi, a Chinese immigrant and landlord; and, finally, the author himself, a reluctant beneficiary of urban renewal. Russell Leigh Sharman weaves these oral histories together with fine-grained ethnographic observations and urban history to examine the ways that immigration, housing, ethnic change, gentrification, race, class, and gender have affected the neighborhood over time. Providing access to the nuances of inner-city life, "The tenants of East Harlem" shows how roots sink so quickly in a community that has always hosted the transient, how new immigrants are challenging the claims of the old, and how that cycle is threatened as never before by the specter of gentrification.
