Résumé:
One overcast weekend in October 1974, Georges Perec set out in quest of the "infraordinary": the humdrum, the non-event, the everyday--"what happens," as he put it, "when nothing happens." His choice of locale was Place Saint-Sulpice, where, ensconced behind first one café window, then another, he spent three days recording everything to pass through his field of vision: the people walking by; the buses and driving-school cars caught in their routes; the pigeons moving suddenly en masse; a wedding (and then a funeral) at the church in the center of the square; the signs, symbols and slogans littering everything; and the darkness that finally absorbs it all. In An Attempt at Exhausting a Place in Paris, Perec compiled a melancholic, slightly eerie and oddly touching document in which existence boils down to rhythm, writing turns into time and the line between the empirical and the surreal grows surprisingly thin.

Résumé:
Someone who doesn’t experience or understand pleasure re-invents poetry for the 21st century conflicted ego, viewing life as a political problem that no amount of startling emotional turmoil or insight can solve. The texts here range from confessions of conflicted feelings to theories of obsolesce, from the desire for a fluffy towel, to possible dialogs for a future detective novel. Freely mixing a calm, straight-forward voice with fragmented shades of hysteria and polemic, the book lays bare the unsettling disappointment of youthful hope, the utopian dream, and energy lost somewhere between a party and a political action.

With incisive humour and caustic sympathy, in three short stories, Anna Leventhal gives us characters that live in a world strolling a few steps beside our own. Exploring class, ownership, and civic duty, Moving Day captures the totalitarian exercise of a mandatory, city-wide move and the effect of its bureaucratic mishaps. The shiftless narrator of Last Man Standing has his social bubble threatened by a dubious emergency, while a diagnosis in Sweet Affliction suggests a new stage in human evolution.

In the alleyways magicians pull ghosts out of hats, while policemen climb over fences, out of the drains, and airplanes are carefully folded notes left all over the place. There is a steamboat in the backyard and one day it will die. Life, as it is known in i cannot pretend to be a ghost today, is a domestic storm brewing within the careful vocabulary that Fletcher takes for rides around the house, down the hallway, and into the kitchen.
