First published by "Country Life" in 1903, and reissued in France in 2002, this book is illustrated with woodcuts in the style of and period photographs, and tells the story of the creation of an English garden in the most improbable site imaginable on the Giudecca. The garden became, unsurprisingly, a resort of poets and aesthetes, and, having been given to the ex-queen of Aspasia and Yugoslavia, ended up as the property of the equally mad Austrian artist Hundertwasser. Now a "monumento nazionale", the Giardino Eden is still there, but closed to the public until funds for its restoration become available. Postface by Marie-Thérèse Weal.

In response to the theme of the 2016 Venice Biennial, Portugal presented a site-specific pavilion occupying an urban front in the midst of physical and social regeneration on Giudecca, an archipelago just south of Venice. The pavilion exhibited four works by Pritzger Prize winner Álvaro Siza (born 1933) on the theme of social housing Campo di Marte (Venice), Schilderswijk (The Hague), Schlesisches Tor (Berlin) and Bairro da Bouça (Porto) revealing his collaborative experience with the local inhabitants and unique understanding of the European city and citizenship. These projects resulted in the creation of neighborhood spaces aimed at a more tolerant, multicultural society, a subject important to the current European political agenda. This book unveils the curatorial process and the display of these works in Venice. Included are images of Siza’s recent visits to the neighborhoods, plus a presentation of the changes triggered by immigration, ghettoization, gentrification and “touristification.”

Depuis ses débuts modestes comme apprenti d’un tailleur de pierre, Palladio s’est élevé jusqu’à devenir l’architecte en chef de la République de Venise, alors épicentre de l’innovation européenne. Il y a créé les églises du Redentore et de San Giorgio Maggiore sur le promontoire qui avance entre le canal de la Giudecca et la lagune. Palladio a bâti la mondialement célèbre basilique, ainsi que la villa Rotonda et le Théâtre olympique dans la ville voisine de Vicence, tout comme plusieurs villas rurales dans la campagne de Vénétie, qui se distinguent par la rencontre entre l’architecture locale, vernaculaire, des structures classiques et la présence de portiques qui ménagent des espaces de transition entre intérieur et extérieur.
