Quand le numérique marque-t-il l’architecture? Quelles sont les conditions ayant poussé les architectes à intégrer des outils numériques à leur pratique? Tout au long du programme de recherche Archéologie du numérique, le CCA a recueilli les documents d’archives de vingt-cinq projets réalisés entre la fin des années 1980 et le début des années 2000 afin de comprendre cette période en tant qu’origine du numérique. Cependant, dès lors que l’on définit le numérique comme un état rendu possible par les fondements conceptuels des médias numériques et non nécessairement par ces médias eux-mêmes, les contours de ce moment numérique – la date et les circonstances de son commencement – deviennent moins clairs. Il existe huit millions d’histoires des origines du numérique en architecture. Ce livre rassemble quatorze d’entre elles pour former une chronologie des réponses à la question suivante : « Quand le numérique marque-t-il l’architecture? » Les propos présentés ici offrent une analyse des changements particuliers qu’a subis la pensée de l’architecture, du bâti et de la ville, ainsi que des déplacements technologiques qui ont résulté de cette évolution. Cet ouvrage marque ainsi tout à la fois le point final du programme Archéologie du numérique, et une ouverture vers de nouveaux horizons autour du numérique en architecture. Et si le fait de poser la question « Quand le numérique marque-t-il l’architecture? » peut susciter en réponse huit millions d’histoires, alors on imagine aisément qu’elle pourrait aussi engendrer huit millions de digressions et de ramifications, dont chacune explorerait des cas différents ou des géographies singulières – comme une sorte de Tristram Shandy du numérique, qui se développerait à mesure que le CCA continuerait de construire ses archives numériques et de les rendre toujours plus accessibles aux chercheurs. Un tel roman de digressions pourrait fournir la matière de futurs projets de recherche et se prolonger dans l’étude de nouvelles archives, pour le plus grand plaisir des lecteurs.

Hila Peleg reassembles hours of discarded film footage, challenging the notion of documentation and returning to view the physical and social contexts—the relational space—of Matta-Clark’s interventions. And from hundreds of travel photographs, Kitty Scott constructs a panorama of Matta-Clark’s visual notes on the world around him—a foil to his artworks. In foregrounding seemingly incidental parts of the collection, these studies manifest an exploratory way of working with archives, by which selecting, presenting, and writing are processes of ongoing research. Rather than synthesize, CP138 Gordon Matta-Clark: Readings of the archive by Yann Chateigné, Hila Peleg, and Kitty Scott extends the scope of what constitutes Matta-Clark’s body of work and thus the physical and intellectual terrain within which to situate it.

Personnalité excentrique, totalement dédiée à son art, Bettina réside à partir de 1972 au Chelsea Hotel suite à l’incendie de son atelier dans lequel elle a perdu toutes ses archives. Vivant telle une recluse dans cette communauté d’artistes, Bettina produit et accumule dans son minuscule studio une œuvre considérable qui s’inscrit pleinement dans la grande histoire des avant-gardes artistiques du XXe siècle. Ses pièces sont suspendues dans l’atelier, accrochées aux murs, posées à même le sol : elles envahissent l’espace dans un continuum menant au vertige, le geste artistique se fait expérience physique et visuelle. Aux confins de l’abstraction, Bettina manipule, tord, étale, étire matière, lumière et ombre. Sa pratique sérielle donne à voir un univers hypnotique et d’une grande puissance visuelle. En 2019, la photographe franco-marocaine Yto Barrada expose expose quelques œuvres de Bettina au LMCC’s, à New York, qui permet la redécouverte de son travail. Barrada gagne la confiance de Bettina qui ouvre pour la première fois ses archives dans lesquelles Yto Barrada et Gregor Huber vont se plonger pendant près de trois ans. Ils imaginent un livre avec la complicité de Bettina jusqu'au décès de cette dernière le 2 novembre 2021, à l'âge de 94 ans, qui remet au jour une œuvre majeure produite par une artiste iconique.
