And what does it mean to question family structures – the way they organise, coerce and make deviant certain lifeforms – and dwell in other possibilities of kin-making? Not just a jolly rethinking of objects or a polyamorous romp through relationships, this book reckons with the extractavist histories of materials and the social relations that frame much of contemporary life. Spanning fiction and theory, the collection of texts expands the idea of an artist’s book by bringing words into conversation with an aesthetic proposition. From colonial conquest to climate collapse, it tells toxic and tender stories of interdependence among all things sentient and insentient.

Résumé:
China’s spectacular growth has brought not just prosperity, but also serious damage to the environment. For photographer Andreas Seibert, the present state of the Huai River is a clear example of these problems. Several stretches of the river have been so seriously polluted by toxic waste that people are advised not to even touch the water. Seibert has traveled along the river from source to mouth in order to record how it changes from a stretch of water rising amidst unspoiled nature into a large and poisonous river. Pictures taken on his travels present the poor hinterlands which are generally forgotten in discussions on China, and show the people who live on and near the river — in a habitat on the brink of destruction.

4th of October, 2010 at 12.25pm in Ajka, Veszprém county, Hungary: around a million cubic meters of toxic waste were released after the rupture of the retaining wall in one of the reservoirs used for the accumulation of MAL aluminum company trash. The spill reached two meters high and started a destructive race trying to release its energy, flooding the nearby Devecser and Kolontár villages. Ten human casualties were counted and material damages were impossible to measure, including the destruction or irreparable deterioration of numerous houses, the disappearance of infrastructures and the poisoning of dozens of fields. These photos have been taken six months after the accident when silence takes place of the headlines, and just The Line is left.

Fashion is political. From the red carpets of the Met Gala to online fast fashion, clothes tell a story of inequality, racism and climate crisis. In this book, Tansy E. Hoskins unpicks the threads of capitalist industry to reveal the truth about our clothes. Fashion brands entice us to consume more by manipulating us to feel ugly, poor and worthless, sentiments that line the pockets of billionaires exploiting colonial supply chains. Garment workers on poverty pay risk their lives in dangerous factories, animals are tortured, fossil fuels extracted and toxic chemicals spread just to keep this season's collections fresh. This volume goes beyond ethical fashion and consumer responsibility showing that if we want to feel comfortable in our clothes, we need to reshape the system and ensure this is not our last season.

Résumé:
Like an organism sitting and breathing on its site in the Chihuahuan desert, the Swan House is a building of organic beauty and hybrid cultural intelligence. Simone Swan has created an architectural and environmental project that re-examines and promotes traditional adobe building while introducing compatible forms, such as the Nubian vault and dome. Swan studied with the great Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy in his Cairo studio and after his death in 1989 adopted his mission of helping house the world’s poor. Simone Swan: Adobe Building is the first book to discuss and illustrate Swan’s architecture while also chronicling one of her annual workshops in Dollens’ first-hand account. Dollens suggests that by biologically analyzing historic adobe we may be able to hybridize its constituents as replacements for current toxic materials, creating new biomimetic, adobe-related building materials suitable for green architecture.

Résumé:
Modern environments are awash with pollutants churning through the air, from toxic gases and intensifying carbon to carcinogenic particles and novel viruses. The effects on our bodies and our planet are perilous. This is the first thorough study of the increasingly widespread use of digital technologies to monitor and respond to air pollution. It presents practice-based research on working with communities and making sensor toolkits to detect pollution while examining the political subjects, relations, and worlds these technologies generate. Spanning three project areas, this study describes collaborations to monitor air pollution from fracking infrastructure, to document emissions in urban environments, and to create air-quality gardens. As these projects show, how people respond to, care for, and struggle to transform environmental conditions informs the political subjects and collectives they become as they strive for more breathable worlds.

Résumé:
This publication explores the ways in which the development of the built environment has contributed to health and well-being problems and how the physical design of the places we live in may support, or constrain, healthy lifestyle choices. It sets out how understanding these relationships more fully may lead to policy and practice that reduces health inequalities, increases well-being and allows people to live more flourishing, fulfilling lives. It examines the consequences of ‘car orientated’ design, the ‘toxic’ High Street, and poor quality, cramped housing; and the importance of nature in cities, and of initiatives such as community gardening, healthy food programmes and Park Run. It questions whether Heritage is always conducive to well-being and offers lessons from holistic and innovative programmes from the UK, North America and Australia which have successfully improved community and individual health and well-being.

Résumé:
In distressed urban neighborhoods where residential segregation concentrates poverty, liquor stores outnumber supermarkets, toxic sites are next to playgrounds, and more money is spent on prisons than schools, residents also suffer disproportionately from disease and premature death. Recognizing that city environments and the planning processes that shape them are powerful determinants of population health, urban planners today are beginning to take on the added challenge of revitalizing neglected urban neighborhoods in ways that improve health and promote greater equity. In this book, Jason Corburn argues that city planning must return to its roots in public health and social justice. To show healthy city planning in action, Corburn examines collaborations between government agencies and community coalitions in the San Francisco Bay area, including efforts to link environmental justice, residents' chronic illnesses, housing and real estate development projects, and planning processes with public health.

Résumé:
This compendium of essays and projects presents a confrontation of radically dissimilar projects which underscores the exploration of architectural empowerment at the core of the office’s work. Four themes are presented in four volumes: Cultural Resistance, Occupying Earth, Public Prerogatives, and Territory and Transgressions. Architects build in and for a system that is not only pathological, but toxic. It is ruining the only planet we have, and we are clearly at the end of what is still possible within this ecology. The architecture presented in this book is a form of resistance – one which actively engages in the societies and territories it is inscribed in and which presents an antidote to the accelerating banalization of our everyday environments. The search for singularity is not a search for formal distinction or a fetishism of the architectural object, but instead the desire to inscribe oneself into a unique territory and moment in time.

Résumé:
The renaissance of wood in architecture began in the early 1990s following the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. A lively interest in sustainable materials made wood particularly attractive and it became an important feature in the developing global ecology. Wood as a building material for the home has become independent from the aesthetic designs of a well-known Swedish furniture chain, and it now stands for a healthy interior environment, free of harmful toxic substances, with naturally balanced humidity and comfortable, regulated temperatures. This volume documents in full technical detail some 25 timber buildings in three main areas: residential buildings, holiday homes, and living and working. The individual projects cover a large range of sizes, budgets, and types of construction, and they also show wood in combination with such materials as stone, concrete, and steel. The featured work comes from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Finland, Ireland, USA, Canada, China, Australia and Brazil, and the architects include Philip Gumuchdjian, Mario Botta, Kengo Kuma and Baumschlager + Eberle.
