The urban space is a privileged laboratory for observing and experiencing the density of signs and their multiple frameworks: Signage, Giant Screens, Signboards, Flags, Poster Displays, Architecture and Advertisement, Surveillance Technologies, Tracking Devices, etc. Eric Sadin started this project during a residence in Kyoto, Japan, then enlarged the focus of the inquiry to further Asian, European, and American cities as Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Bombay, Paris, London, Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City, New York. The result is a fascinating visual journey in 2000 colour illustrations with explanatory captions, structured into some 100 topics and analysed in brilliant theoretical texts providing the necessary background.

In ''The Island Position,'' John Lehr explores the facades of American commercial spaces that are threatened by the emergence of e-commerce. Masquerading as a typology of storefronts, the surfaces in ''The Island Position'' embody something unseen: the people who constructed them. The signage is not simply an appeal to consumption, but a typography of emotion: vulnerability, ingenuity, distress, and hope-the language of capitalism as a form of public address. Lehr is not interested in what is for sale. He is interested in what is at stake.

Then came the Art Deco designs of Pierre Legrain and Rose Adler, who transformed bookbinding into a medium of playful and dazzling experimentation and craftsmanship. Their colorful, imaginative works, often made in exotic materials, are found only in a few prized collections and have rarely been available to the general public. Now, this selection of more than sixty designs, coloured-paper maquettes, and realized bindings are collected in a single volume, with texts introducing the work and discuss its revolutionary effect on modern design. Among the brilliant array of bindings are ones made especially for works by Colette, Paul Verlaine, André Gide, Guillaume Apollinaire, Stéphane Mallarmé, Michel Leiris, and Jean Giraudoux.
