Résumé:
One of the most important American artists of the 20th century, Donald Judd (1928–1994) pioneered the use of industrial materials and fabrication in serial forms to redefine the relationships between artist, art object, viewer, and space, and usher in the Minimalist style. His signature work transformed in 1984 when he radically revised his approach to color after learning of an industrial process for shaping and enameling aluminum in an array of colors from a commercial color chart. In the last decade of his life, he created multicolored works of serial forms, both wall-mounted and free-standing, which reveal an entirely new engagement with color. Focusing entirely on Judd’s multicolored works, this book features essays by leading scholars that illuminate this body of work and examine its relationship to his oeuvre as a whole. Judd was an important theorist in his own right, and his 1993 text, “Some Aspects of Color in General and Red and Black in Particular,” is reproduced here. An essential book on a groundbreaking artist, the volume includes images of dozens of multicolored works accompanied by preparatory drawings and collages, as well as photographs from the studio and the factory.

Résumé:
This new edition of the classic text that has become a standard in architecture curricula gives students in-depth understanding and insight for improving architectural working drawings through the integration of traditional guidelines, standards, and fundamentals with today's CAD operations. Ralph Liebing uses detailed coverage to emphasize the importance of learning the basics first, while encouraging mastery and application of a broad array of techniques and procedures. "Architectural working drawings, fourth edition" provides clear explanations of why these drawings are required, what they must contain to be relevant, the importance of understanding drawing intent and content, and how to combine individual drawings into meaningful and construction-ready sets. Using hundreds of real-world examples from a geographically diverse base, this book covers everything from site plans, floor plans, and interior and exterior elevations to wiring schematics, plumbing specifications, and miscellaneous details. Nearly 500 illustrations provide examples of the best and the worst in architectural working drawings. This fourth edition contains a wealth of new and updated material, including a new chapter of CAD case studies as well as substantially increased and integrated CAD coverage throughout the book, new drawing coordination systems from the Construction Specifications Institute and AIA, a new chapter on the coordination of working drawings and specificationS, and more than 140 new illustrations reflecting the methods for improving CAD drawings.

Résumé:
The city has become an important new starting point in the quest for architecture. At a time of extreme urbanisation, unharnessed urban growth has led many architects to rethink the way that buildings are designed for the global metropolis. It is no longer practical or desirable to impose the standardised, idealized planning of the 20th century. Rather than viewing the city as a fixed entity, architects are now seeking direct inspiration from the existing urban environment and learning from its ever-changing state that resists predetermination. The city, in all its complexity, has become a realm of invention and a space for possibilities where new designs can be tested. This is as apparent in the work that architects are undertaking in the informal settlements, or favelas, of Latin America, as in the more regulated spaces of Chicago, London or Tokyo. Favouring an inclusive way of viewing the city, no aspect of the urban world is any longer rejected outright, and architects and urban designers instead find potential and learn from the underlying dynamics of the contemporary city. This attitude highlights the generative capacities of the city and finds new ways of engaging it. At the very least, it advances an architectural thinking that engages the city on its own ground, abets its potential and seeks opportunities in the existing condition.

Résumé:
In Nairobi’s underserved neighborhoods, “hustle” has emerged as both a vital survival strategy and a way of life for youth. Exploring the multiple meanings and manifestations of the hustle economy across different scenarios of provisioning, distribution, exchange, learning, and mobilizing, ''Hustle Urbanism'' draws on more than a decade of ethnographic engagement to center the logics, perspectives, and inventive strategies of a group of youth who constantly navigate job scarcity, inadequate basic services, and climate-induced harms. Tatiana Thieme shows how young people develop tools of resistance against the legacies of colonial violence and uneven urban development while carving out spaces of opportunity for themselves and their peers. The stories she includes bring thick ethnographic detail and longitudinal perspective to the lives and livelihoods of youth whose diverse skill sets and knowledges span from circular economies and eco-activism to hip hop and local leadership. Filling a significant gap in both existing scholarship and popular discussion, ''Hustle Urbanism'' offers critical theorization of precarious urban environments and the affirmative modes of making life work in the city against the odds.

Résumé:
In the contemporary world of competitive design bids and constant pressures to cut costs, there is a tendency for design to be taken for granted as a mere series of tasks to be optimized as a means to reduce construction costs. However, the complexities of the creative process require adequate time and opportunity to succeed—with time provided to allow thoughts to build and be set down, and opportunities for interdisciplinary interactions to occur in order for solutions to mature. The active engagement of architecture students in the design and construction of real projects is today an important dimension at more than 150 universities worldwide. And yet, this emerging field continues to suffer from an insubstantial scholarly foundation. An initiative of universities in North America has developed a consistent and innovative practice model, which sets a new standard for this key aspect of education and professional practice. ''Thinking while doing'' by Stephen Verderber provides the reader with insight into the design and construction process and the way in which the design/build approach informs the university-level learning experience.

Résumé:
Already number TEN, ''Pressing Matters X'' is a special issue reflecting a year of reflection and change, after several waves of the pandemic, Black Lives Matter protests and newly developed hybrid teaching methods. It follows last year’s ''Pressing Matters 9'' that was completely rethought with the aim to present an Open Source publication that shares the Department of Architecture’s concept of design-research, an integral approach of critical thinking, rigorous research, and design, representing a deep understanding of the complex layers of architecture. Together with Jonathan Jackson & team of WSDIA, a more integral design was developed, allowing input from research [ARI labs], students, faculty and Penn’s special events. This anniversary of ''Pressing Matters'' is celebrated by adding the ''decade'' color of silver to the usual recycled cardboard cover of Weitzman’s architecture publication. It also represents a year of new opportunities brought by a complete rethinking of education through the introduction of remote learning, zoom lectures and meetings. A much larger international group of diverse jurors, experts, and critics could be invited as travel was of no hindrance for attendance.

Résumé:
Amidst city concrete and suburban sprawl, Americans are discovering new ways to reconnect with the natural world. From community gardens in New York's Lower East Side to homeless shelters in California, the search for a more sustainable future has led grassroots groups to a profound reconnection to place and to the natural world. Studies of the health consequences of renewing a connection with nature support the urgency of providing green surroundings as cities expand and the majority of the earth's population lives in urban areas. Medical research results, from groups as diverse as healthy volunteers, surgery patients, and heart attack survivors, suggest that contact with nature may improve health and well-being. Engagement with nearby natural places also provides restoration from mental fatigue and support for more resilient and cooperative behavior. Aspects of stronger community life are fostered by access to nature, suggesting that there are significant social as well as physical and psychological benefits from connection with the natural world. This volume brings together research from anthropology, sociology, public health, psychology, and landscape architecture to highlight how awareness of locale and a meaningful renewal of attachment with the earth are connected to delight in learning about nature as well as to civic action and new forms of community. Community garden coalitions, organic market advocates, and greenspace preservationists resist the power of global forces, enacting visions of a different future. Their creative efforts tell a story of a constructive and dynamic middle ground between private plots and public action, between human health and ecosystem health, between individual attachment and urban sustainability.

Résumé:
A cloth edition of this book has been published by Yale University Press at $ 90,00. This engaging book presents the first critical retrospective look at the extraordinary architectural achievement of Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, and their firm. Known for such prominent buildings as the Sainsbury Wing at the National Gallery in London and the Seattle Art Museum as well as such major urban revitalization plans as Washington Avenue in Miami and South Street in Philadelphia, Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates changed the face of architectural history. This husband and wife team rejected the universality of modernist design for a particularized contextual and associational approach to building, lauding the “complexity and contradictions” in the historic cityscape and “learning from Las Vegas” the value and vitality of the everyday environment. The book, which combines both biography and critical analysis, includes essays on the firm’s early and later architectural works and on their lesser-known decorative arts. It also features handsome color plates of the firm’s buildings, architectural drawings, and furniture and other decorative arts, as well as a checklist of all their buildings and projects.

Résumé:
The Walker Art Center recently opened its expanded space, which includes a new theatre, a new restaurant, and more galleries, but is best known for being Herzog & de Meuron’s first public building in the United States. The project drew national coverage from media including 'The New York Times'. 'Expanding the Center' caters to and piques public interest in the building with a generous selection of images, including sketches, renderings, and photographs of the construction process and the completed work. Herzog & de Meuron’s shimmering but grounded design mirrors the textures and shades of the Walker’s original space, and an institutional philosophy based in innovation and risk-taking, the exploration of alternative approaches to learning, the experimental use of technologies to communicate information, and the design of spaces to enhance a variety of museum experiences. The book is organized around the decisions and actions of the architects, builders, Walker staff and the audience - i.e. designing, constructing, unveiling, staging, gathering, patterning, framing, collecting - and highlights the thinking that led to the visible form of the Center as well as the innovative projects and initiatives that give it its inimitable character.

Résumé:
At a time when modern architecture has become a means for cities to up their game and raise their cultural profile on the world stage, Toronto is coming into its own. Fully entrenched in a design renaissance that is dramatically changing the face and space of the city, Toronto is now a welcome playground for celebrated local talent and international star architects. While some cities can be immediately defined by a specific style, Toronto is distinguished instead by a fusion of contemporary architecture, heritage preservation and sustainable urban design. A true mosaic of architecture and culture, Toronto is a city learning to recognise and celebrate its diversity – it is a city set to rediscover itself. "Design city : Toronto" showcases over thirty exemplary contemporary interior and architectural projects, both complete and underway. These range from hip restaurants and bars by Toronto-based practices to major institutional buildings completed by the likes of Will Alsop, Behnisch, Behnisch & Partners, Foster and Partners, Frank Gehry, Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg and Daniel Libeskind. Written in an engaging and lively manner, the book is illustrated with new photography by Tom Arban. It also provides a neighbourhood overview and biographies of featured designers.
