Résumé:
When the Bauhaus moved to Dessau, the desk moved with it, landing in the director’s office, where it was used as a demonstration of a vision of a modern office culture. The desk took up residence temporarily in the Lawn Road Flats in London before following Gropius to Lincoln, Massachusetts, in 1938. It has remained in Lincoln since then and is currently in the Gropius family’s private home. An index of the changing fortunes of the Bauhaus, Gropius’ desk itself becomes an actor in a complex history of changing locations and social environments. Desk in Exile traces the trajectory of this uniquely weighted object, offering a model of an object-based history of exile. Part of Spector Books’ series of readers on individual aspects of Bauhaus design, this volume comes out of the research and curatorial work carried out by the Bauhaus Lab 2016.

Résumé:
For nearly a thousand years, the gun has played a key role in shaping histories, societies, and lives. Incalculable sums of creativity, innovation, and design have been dedicated to this tool which continues to evolve in unexpected ways. While the gun has always been valued for its usefulness in hunting, sport, and war, it has also been appreciated—even fetishized—for its aesthetic appeal. Nevertheless, the gun is an object whose primary function is to kill. Its destructive and deadly purpose imbues the gun with a unique potency—both symbolic and real. Hence, it can be difficult, if not impossible, to consider the gun as just another tool or designed object. Over time, social, political, and economic forces—particularly in the United States—have created a context that often forces individuals into “pro-gun” and “anti-gun” factions, leaving little room to critically study the gun as an object or consider the complexity of various perspectives. Today, it is estimated that there are approximately 875 million small arms throughout the world. As this number continues to climb and the surrounding debate only grows more polarized, it is time to holistically examine the past, present, and future of the gun

Résumé:
Architecture Drawing Topology presents an extensive body of drawings and texts and their complex relationalities, ranging from ontology to history. These relationalities have been developed in response to the natural topography of the Greek island of Hydra, and tested in the urban landscape of Berlin, Paris and Tokyo. Through constellations that are both real and virtual, the collection is composed of numerous highly detailed drawings. The diverse drawings express a complex and ambiguous field of significations, instrumentalizing an open production of meaning. Positions, relations, orders, levels, dimensions, energies, and processes are discovered as a new field of possibilities, creating an architecture of the event.

Archigram comprised Warren Chalk (1927-88), Peter Cook (1936-), Dennis Crompton (1935-), David Greene (1937-), Ron Herron (1930-94), and Michael Webb (1937-). Together, in the 1960s and early 1970s, they envisioned the future of architecture in ways that enthralled a generation. In an era defined by the space race, they developed a 'high-tech', lightweight, infra-structural approach that stretched far beyond known technologies or contemporary realities. Archigram's influence has been profound and enduring. This book catalogues Archigram's activities over fourteen years, together with commentaries by the architects and critics writing then and now. Edited and designed by Archigram member Dennis Crompton, it has been 40 years in the making.
