Résumé:
Using the title of her 2004 photograph, "My mother, my son," as an inspirational and creative starting point, Mary Frey pulls from her vast archive of photographs to create a pictorial story collapsing linear time. Frey intimately and masterfully captures subjects at ease in environments that feel, at once, wholly familiar yet unmoored from their own reality. Using as its base the intersection of the domestic, the banal and the profoundly common rituals which define our shared humanity, the black and white and color images in "My mother, my son,". present the viewer with something more reminiscent of memory’s elusive imprint. Frey touches upon the mystery of life: the finite ending point of death and the legacies that are left behind. Past and future join together in each present, fleeting moment.

ee/Saw is an illuminating history of how photographs frame and change our perspectives. Starting from single images by the world's most important photographers - from Eugène Atget to Alex Webb - Geoff Dyer shows us how to read a photograph, as he takes us through a series of close readings that are by turns moving, funny, prescient and surprising. Following Dyer's previous books on photography, ''The ongoing moment'' and ''The street philosophy of Garry Winogrand,'' ''See/saw'' brilliantly combines visual scrutiny and stylistic flair. It shows us how a photograph can simultaneously record and invent the world, and reveals a master seer at work. In the spirit of the intellectual curiosity of Berger, Sontag and Didion, Geoff Dyer helps us to see the world around us, and within us, afresh.

Résumé:
Photography was invented between the publication of Adam Smith’s ''The Wealth of Nations'' and Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels’s ''The Communist Manifesto.'' Taking the intertwined development of capitalism and the camera as their starting point, the essays collected here investigate the relationship between capitalist accumulation and the photographic image, and ask whether photography might allow us to refuse capitalism’s violence—and if so, how? Drawn together in productive disagreement, the essays in this collection explore the relationship of photography to resource extraction and capital accumulation, from 1492 to the postcolonial; the camera’s potential to make visible critical understandings of capitalist production and society, especially economies of class and desire; and the ways the camera and the image can be used to build cultural and political counterpublics from which a democratic struggle against capitalism might emerge.

Résumé:
This book enlarges the traditional catalog of labyrinths being itself labyrinthine, remarked French deconstructionist philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy on the first edition of the text. The starting point for this transcript of four lectures is a public artwork that Olaf Nicolai installed in Paris in 1998. Nicolai, whose work has been shown at Documenta X and the 49th and 50th Venice Biennales, uses diverse media to question the ways in which we use our physical bodies to encounter the everyday environment. By exploring and combining a broad spectrum of topics related to the labyrinth theme, the book serves as both a reference system to Nicolai's work and an independent source book dealing with labyrinthian matter, from the fable of the minotaur to the floor plan of IKEA. Translated from German by Sadie Plant.

Résumé:
“Architecture & Arts” documents the innovations brought about by painters, sculptors, designers, writers, photographers, and filmmakers, as well as creators from the widest variety of artistic circles and expressive styles, into the field of architecture. At the same time, it reveals the digressions of architects into the visual arts, a discipline that has shared with architecture a common project of a radical, at times visionary, aesthetic transformation of reality. The volume includes works by Malevich, Cartier-Bresson, Steichen, Terragni, Depero, Fritz Lang, Le Corbusier, Gehry, Rossi, Piano, and Oldenburg, to name a few. This richly illustrated volume offers a complete overview of architects and artists from the historic avant-gardes (Futurism, Suprematism, Constructivism, Dadaism, Neoplasticism, Expressionism, Surrealism, and the modern movements until the postwar period) to the contemporary world, starting from Informal-Spatialist work and continuing with Situationism, Brutalism, Pop Art, Minimalism, and Post modernism to the present day.

Résumé:
''For Want of a Nail'' takes as its starting point a series of curious memoranda sent from J. Robert Oppenheimer's office in October 1943 and archived in the Los Alamos Historical Museum, in which the eminent scientist repeatedly requests a nail in the wall upon which he could hang his hat. The persistence and specificity of the request for this nail inspired the international art collective Futurefarmers to create, by hand (and after more than a half-century delay), three nails for the theoretical physicist: one forged from a meteorite, one cast using 1943 steel pennies, and a third made by re-fusing Trinitite, a material formed by residue from the Trinity nuclear bomb test. Throughout this multidisciplinary project, Futurefarmers constructs a narrative that runs parallel, and in some cases counter to, the conventional accounts of the Manhattan Project and Oppenheimer, its chief architect.

Charting the influences of this key architectural practice the book also traces how ECA have continued to inspire architecture debates around public and private space. Including unbuilt designs, work in progress and specifically commissioned sketches by Cullinan himself, the book represents an exclusive insight into ECA and their unique approach to architecture. Featuring detailed descriptions of seminal buildings, such as the Knox House and the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Cambridge, alongside engaging discussions about composition, classicism, technology and critical regionalism, "Ends middles beginnings" is a must-have for anyone interested in architecture and the built environment.

Founded in 2008, the French-Lebanese firm of Youssef Tohme Architects and Associates has a delicate signature that takes the regional context as its starting point in developing an individual architectural language. By using a wide variety of materials that interact with the built environment, they create buildings that evolve over time alongside their inhabitants. The book documents twelve of the firm’s projects – from a single-family home to a museum, including urban interventions in Beirut, Paris, Bordeaux, Marseille, and Bucharest. The book also includes an essay that takes a comprehensive look at the working methods of this firm, focusing in particular on the dimension of time and the changes that occur as the buildings are used.

Résumé:
People involved in architecture need to be familiar with construction methods in order to be in control of their designs. New technical requirements impact on our buildings and call for up-to-date specialist knowledge, which leads to new forms of architecture. This handbook uses clearly comprehensible 3D isometric diagrams to introduce the world of contemporary construction, from concept through to the detail; photographs are used to illustrate the content. The three main chapters deal with the structure, the building envelope, and the fit-out, starting with a clear introduction to the construction principles of modern building methods. Using drawings of selected built examples at scales of 1:10 and 1:20, a deeper examination of details is possible.

Résumé:
The career of avant-garde photographer and activist Germaine Krull (1897–1985) took her across the world over a turbulent century. After growing up around Europe, Krull studied photography in Munich during the First World War. There she acquired her nickname or alter-ego ‘Chien fou’ (Mad Dog), which provides the chronological and thematic starting point for this volume of writings drawn from the course of Krull’s extraordinary life, most published for the first time. The selected texts range from artistic manifestos to political essays to memoirs, written between the 1920s and ’80s in a wide variety of places and circumstances. They narrate Krull’s life among the creative communities of the Bavarian Soviet Republic and interwar Paris, her participation in the French Resistance in Brazil and Equatorial Africa, and her later decision to settle in Thailand, then India.
