Résumé:
This hybrid essay involves theory, history and building design. The narrative thread places very particular emphasis on the period between 1850 and 1950, a time at which new techniques and aesthetic rules came to the fore, leading to the development of a concern with turning the roof into an habitable space. Résumé:
This hybrid essay involves theory, history and building design. The narrative thread places very particular emphasis on the period between 1850 and 1950, a time at which new techniques and aesthetic rules came to the fore, leading to the development of a concern with turning the roof into an habitable space. "Dwelling on the Roof" ends with a selection of projects spanning the past fifty years which have continued to develop this theme. Included are works by modern architects such as Alejandro de la Sota and Giancarlo De Carlo, as well as works by contemporary architects such as Foreign Office Architects and Kazuyo Sejima.

Résumé:
Bringing together essays and architectural projects that discuss housing as a key component in the social and urban development of the Ethiopian capital, which has undergone rapid changes over the past two decades – and led to disruptive consequences for the city’s physical and social fabric. Housing has been one of the key factors in this transformation, impacting job creation, craftsmanship, social and spatial equality, dwelling practices, and more. Presenting twelve projects developed by graduate students from TU Delft’s Global Housing educational programme, the book explores alternative approaches to housing design from the perspective of this urban revolution.

Résumé:
Chow offers an alternate vision to the conventional suburban housing that characterizes much of our domestic landscape. Her integrated, original approach to design sees the residential setting as a fabric of interrelated spaces that supports cultural diversity and change, promotes sharing in a setting, and sustains a more intense use of land. With its concise, informative text and illustrations--including photographs and Chow's drawings--"Suburban space" challenges architects, landscape architects, developers, and planners to reconceptualize suburban housing. Chow has made comparative studies of neighborhoods in Boston, Charleston, San Francisco, Levittown, Radburn, and housing by Rudolf Schindler and Irving Gill, as well as other residential settings. Her argument for a fabric of dwelling is founded not on generalizations about how people live but on documented observations of the particular ways in which people organize their daily lives. This book demonstrates how one of the most disparaged yet common types of housing in the United States can become more environmentally and culturally viable.

Résumé:
"Dwelling: Five Years’ Work" on the Problem of the Habitation was the third of four groundbreaking works written by the Soviet modernist architect Moisei Ginzburg (1892-1946). Originally published in 1934, this facsimile edition is the first translation of the entire book into English, detailing Ginzburg’s work over a five-year period in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Starting with a broad survey of habitation in different cultures and traditions, Ginzburg elucidates the ways in which he and his colleagues tried to adapt and apply architectural solutions to the new demands of Soviet life. This includes a detailed analysis of the Narkomfin building in Moscow, now being restored by his grandson, the architect Alexey Ginzburg; a description of his work on the commune house; and the theories behind two major housing projects: Magnitogorya and Zeleny Gorod. The period covered by "Dwelling" represents the highpoint of Constructivism.
