Since March 2000, photographer Joel Sternfeld has been documenting the abandoned elevated railway, the High Line, which runs down the West Side of Manhattan. Sometimes a river of grass, sometimes more like wheat fields of Canada, this unique ruin permits contemplation of nature, and of cityscape. Walking the path of this true time landscape, experiencing the seasons as they unfold in a ribbon within the vertical architectural landscape of New York City, Sternfeld has created a suite of images marked by quiet grace and formal rigor. In this book, as in all of his work, landscape is read as a social and cultural indicator.

The eleventh issue of "The Funambulist" can be read as the third installment of a trilogy about the territorialities and architectures of colonialism and postcolonialism. It is dedicated to the precise and strategic political order behind the apparent disorder of debris and ruin in various geographical and historical contexts. The current situations of systematic destruction historically and currently experienced by Syrian and Palestinian populations provides a core to this issue to which are added accounts of the Uyghur, Tamil, and Black American struggles respectively in Xinjiang, Eelam, and the United States, as well as historical descriptions of survival bodies in Sarajevo and monument desecration in West Africa and the Carribeans.

Résumé:
"Plaster monuments" unsettles conventional thinking about copies and originals. As Mari Lending shows, casts were used to restore wholeness to buildings that in reality lay in ruin, or to isolate specific features of monuments to illustrate what was typical of a particular building, style, or era. Arranged in galleries and published in exhibition catalogues, these often enormous objects were staged to suggest the sweep of history, synthesizing structures from vastly different regions and time periods into coherent narratives. The first comprehensive history of these full-scale replicas, "Plaster monuments" examines how they were produced, marketed, sold, and displayed, and how their significance can be understood today.

Résumé:
The post-war years were a very intense period of experiments, visions and imagination. The end of such a tragic period for the world enabled intellectuals and architects in particular, but also film-makers to rethink the future and imagine new situations with an optimistic use of technologies. For some of them, such as Buckminster Fuller, technology was the resource that was to save the world, as in the case of covering Manhattan with a glass dome, almost to preserve it like an ancient ruin. Thus, this new issue of archphoto2.0 is dedicated to the "Visionary Thinkers", to those who turned their minds to imagine new scenarios.

Résumé:
The artist’s book “Detroit“ presents the contemporary urban landscape of this de- industrialized metropolis as an overlay of social and natural history. The catchwords “ruin porn” and “future city” are currently being used in the media to describe what was once celebrated as the “Motor City”. In her photographs and texts, Franziska Klose describes a landscape absolutely consumed by industry, its structure a manifestation of social inequality, despite all the conjurations of an imminent economic boom. The story of the “comeback” is set against land speculation and water shut-offs and contrasts with the emergence of a potential post-growth society based on urban agriculture and individual autonomy.
