This publication contains 14 projects and recent works by Salvador Pérez Arroyo, an experimental and heterodox architect whose designs alternate between light, heavy and utopian. His unstoppable creativity never ceases to amaze. His interest lies far beyond putting forward a clearly identifiable set of mannerisms; each project and building represents for him a new opportunity to engage with something unexplored, ultimately opening it up for new conversations in architecture. Among his most relevant works and projects are the Moncloa lighthouse, the Madrid Planetarium, the restoration of the Palladium Basilica in Venice and the Convention Center of Liepage.

Résumé:
In her work, Buon Fresco, 2014, Dean filmed details of Giotto's frescos in the Upper Basilica in Assisi using a macro lens, in order, she said, to have the perspective of the artist himself. Giotto humanised the depiction of people in painting in a parallel way to St Francis's humanising of sainthood, and this moment, when the radical artist depicted the radical saint is an extremely important juncture in the history of art. Frescoes are meant to be seen from a distance, so this book provides a revelatory view of the minutiae and sophistication of Giotto's brushstrokes, which at times anticipates the future canon of mark marking in Western painting.

Published for David Chipperfield's 2018 exhibition at the Basilica Palladiana in Vicenza, this book documents a selection of 15 current and recent projects by the practice, shown at varying stages in their development in order to convey the range of activities that takes place in an architecture studio today. "It represents our attempt to show how we work, how we develop ideas, how we work in parallel in different projects, cultures, and with different resources, priorities and collaborators, balancing local and global perspectives," says Chipperfield of the exhibition concept informing this volume. Among the nascent or underway enterprises included here are his project for the Fundación Rede de Innovación Arousa in Galicia, Spain, and his concept for Valentino retail.

Résumé:
The Pastoor van Ars Church, built in 1969 by the legendary Dutch Structuralist architect Aldo van Eyck (1918–99) in The Hague, is one of the few significant churches to emerge from the second half of the 20th century. This volume sheds light on the unique architectural and spatial qualities of the building. Although not a Catholic himself, Van Eyck made every effort to build an authentic and contemporary Catholic place of worship. To this end, he harked back to the original typology of the early Christian basilica, whose components he incorporated into new conceptions of space explored by the modernist avant-garde, in particular the dynamic geometries of Mondrian and Brancusi’s forms. Author Francis Strauven, who has previously written an extensive monograph on the Dutch architect, pays particular attention to the intensive design process, which he has reconstructed using more than 100 design sketches from the Van Eyck archive.

Résumé:
[SANAA Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa / works and projects] SANAA has distinguished itself by its original approach to projects. Every building is designed as a kind of equivalent of the abstract spatial diagram of the daily activity it is destined to house. The use of elementary volumes, simple geometry, translucent materials and polycarbonate casing produces a rarefied architecture that is strikingly contemporary. Its buildings include the Saishunkan Seiyaku Women's Dormitory (Kumamoto, 1991), the Multimedia Workshop (Kitakata, 1996), the S-House (Okayama, 1996), the K-Building (Ibaraki, 1997), the Gifu Kitagata Apartment (Gifu, 1998), the O-Museum (Nagano, 1999), and the Small House (Tokyo, 2000). In recent years the group has designed buildings for Prada, Issey Miyake and Christian Dior. This book has been published to accompany the monographic exhibition which after being mounted at the Kanazawa Museum will be held at the Basilica Palladiana in Vicenza from October onwards.

Résumé:
Velazquez. Poussin. Carvaggio. Bernini. Despite their disparate backgrounds, these greats of European Baroque art converged at one remarkable place in time: Rome, 1630. In response to the Protestant Reformation, the Catholic Church turned to these masters of Baroque art to craft works celebrating the glories of the heavens manifested on earth. And so, with glittering monuments like Bernini's imposing bronze columns in St. Peter's Basilica, Rome, 1630 came to be the crossroads of seventeenth-century art, religion, and power. In ''Rome, 1630,'' the renowned French poet and critic Yves Bonnefoy devotes his attention to this single year in the Baroque period in European art. The inclusion of five additional essays on seventeenth-century art situate Bonnefoy's analysis within a lively debate on Baroque art and art history. Translator Hoyt Rogers's afterword pays homage to the author himself, situating ''Rome, 1630'' in Bonnefoy's productive career as a premier French poet and critic.

Résumé:
This publication offers the first comprehensive study in English of Baldassare Longhena (1598–1682), the indispensable architect of the Venetian Baroque. While Longhena's legacy is most visible in his iconic Madonna della Salute, the 17th-century basilica devoted to the Virgin Mary in gratitude for Venice's deliverance from the plague, and in the Pesaro and Rezzonico palaces along the Grand Canal, he created a plethora of other works over the course of a career that spanned half a century. Andrew Hopkins's thought-provoking text considers the full span of Longhena's illustrious career, from his monumental staircases and libraries to the palaces commissioned by private patrons and his projects for Venice's Greek and Jewish communities. This lively account is accompanied by more than sixty color and 300 black-and-white photographs commissioned especially for the book. A complete list of Longhena's work is included in an appendix.
