Résumé:
Tara Donovan's sculptures and installations are mind-bending experiences: she transforms common everyday materials like straws and index cards turning them into elaborate, room-size sculptures that are as surreal as they are beautiful. MacArthur "genius" grant recipient Tara Donovan's otherworldly sculptures have transfixed audiences for over a decade. Taking mundane materials and through clever craftsmanship, ingenuity, and repeated manipulation, the artist builds large-scale works made of rubber bands, plastic tubing, and paper plates into objects that evoke the natural world or other organic material. This volume--which accompanies a major exhibition at MCA Denver--features an expansive selection of her most significant works to date, including sculpture, drawings, works on paper, and site-responsive installations.

So what is an unvention? Some say unventions are simply everyday objects that are familiar to all. They are correct. But they are also wrong. Unventions tell new stories about the things around you releasing them from the mundane trudge of daily routine to take on epic new roles. When you begin to see them you are set free, and soon you will discover your own. Your mind has been in chains for too long! Unventionswill change your world forever.* *Largely in utterly useless ways

Résumé:
Paying tribute to an artistic partnership of more than 30 years, this book explores Peter Fischli and David Weiss's acclaimed and influential body of work, known for its sly humor and profound meditations on the everyday. Throughout the course of their collaboration, Peter Fischli and David Weiss celebrated the sheer triviality of everyday existence, observing the world with bemused detachment. As this book shows, their often humorous work offers a sustained reflection on the intertwined strands of leisure, productivity, and playful absurdity that shape our lives. With its deliberately mundane subject matter and quotidian source material, their work explores the poetics of banality in a wide range of mediums, including photography, videos, slide projections, films, books, sculptures, and multimedia installations.

Résumé:
In July 2008, illustrator and designer Christoph Niemann began Abstract City, a visual blog for the New York Times. His posts were inspired by the desire to re-create simple and everyday observations and stories from his own life that everyone could relate to. In Niemann’s hands, mundane experiences such as riding the subway or trying to get a good night’s sleep were transformed into delightful flights of visual fancy. The struggle to keep up with housework became a battle against adorable but crafty goblins, and nostalgia about New York manifested in simple but strikingly spot-on LEGO creations. This illustrated collection of reflections on modern life includes all 16 of the original blog posts as well as a new chapter created exclusively for the book.

Résumé:
In "The elsewhere is black," Marisa Solomon examines how waste is a mundane part of poor Black survival and a condition of settler colonial racial capitalism. Tracing the flow of trash and waste across Black spaces, from Brooklyn's historically Black Bedford-Stuyvesant to the post-plantation towns of Virginia's Tidewater, Solomon contends that waste infrastructures concentrate environmental risk in an elsewhere that is routinely Black. Solomon emphasizes that ecological violence is a form of racialized heteropatriarchal environmental control that upholds whiteness as a propertied way of life and criminalizes Black survival. As she points to acute sites of toxicity, Solomon theorizes the relationship between the devaluation of land and Black and more-than-human life to reveal how the risks of poisoning, police violence, dispossession, and poverty hold Black life captive.

Résumé:
This is the latest of Donovan Wylie's (born 1971) books that explore the architecture of the Northern Ireland conflict. While Wylie's earlier publications document disappearing military structures, ''Housing Plans for the Future'' focuses on the legacy of architectural containment in urban areas today. Wylie took these photos during walks through a number of social-housing neighborhoods in inner-city Belfast, which look eerily similar. While the built environments at first appear benign, even mundane, sustained looking reveals how they purposely control vision and movement. Walls block vehicle access, houses are inverted to face away from neighboring communities and minimize potential antagonism, and excessive street lighting ensures visibility. These defensive structures, built in the 1970s and '80s and still populated today, are a powerful and largely unrecognized legacy of the Northern Ireland conflict.

Résumé:
Moments spent in elevators, check-ins at airports, subway rides-these are all examples of the kind of "in-between" time that fascinates Walead Beshty and supplies material for his photographs. "In-between time" applies to civic space, too-depopulated modernist housing developments that sit precariously between evacuation and demolition, plants, weeds and vegetation on isolated highway medians, or abandoned shopping malls. More recently, Beshty's adventures in "the in-between" have become a means of production, as he makes creative use of such mundane procedures as air travel or sending a package. This monograph presents a ten-year overview of Walead Beshty's approach to photographic and sculptural representation, and contains newly commissioned essays by Suzanne Hudson and Nicolas Bourriaud, as well as a conversation between Bob Nickas and Beshty.
