Livre d'architecture privée et publique, le "De architectura" de Vitruve intéresse également, dans une relation novatrice longtemps méconnue, les arts mécaniques (mécanique civile, mécanique militaire) et élargit son champ d’étude à des disciplines et thématiques diverses : hydrologie, biologie, géographie, histoire, éthique, histoire événementielle et croyances. Les études sélectionnées dans cet ouvrage s’attachent à saisir dans ses constituants particuliers, mais aussi comme ensemble, cette problématique complexe. Elles la situent dans un contexte historique, socio-culturel, scientifique et technique déterminé, dans le système plus précisément aussi d’une pensée antique aux postulats parfois radicalement différents des nôtres et intégrant dans une vision globale ses interrogations sur l’homme et sur le monde. La démarche critique choisie associe à une enquête conceptuelle une enquête linguistique tendant à identifier l’interdépendance établie dans le De Architectura entre un projet d’auteur et le langage qui lui donne corps.
