Résumé:
This international and illustrated work challenges current writings focussing on the problems of urban public space to present a more nuanced and dialectical conception of urban life. Detailed and extensive international urban case studies show how urban open spaces are used for play, which is defined and discussed using Caillois' four-part definition – competition, chance, simulation and vertigo. Stevens explores and analyses these case studies according to locations where play has been observed: paths, intersections, thresholds, boundaries and props. Applicable to a wide-range of countries and city forms, The Ludic City is a fascinating and stimulating read for all who are involved or interested in the design of urban spaces.

Résumé:
"Urban Grids: Handbook for Regular City Design" is the result of a five-year design research project undertaken by professor Joan Busquets and Dingliang Yang at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. The research that is the foundation for this publication emphasizes the value of open forms for city design, a publication that specifically insists that the grid has the unique capacity to absorb and channel urban transformation flexibly and productively. "Urban Grids" analyzes cities and urban projects that utilize the grid as the main structural device for allowing rational development, and goes further to propose speculative design projects capable of suggesting new urban paradigms drawn from the grid as a design tool.

Résumé:
This publication explores the contested territory between the state and corporate drive to 'securitise' urban space – and the principle of the city as a site for enacting open civil society, participatory democracy, and the freedom of speech and assembly. Starting from the disputed redevelopment of the Oslo Government Quarter since its attack in 2011, the book functions as a broader discursive platform mediating opposing positions at the intersection of architecture/urbanism and security/democracy. The book interposes essays, interviews, site drawings, a lexicon of terms, and photo-essays documenting fieldwork in the UK, USA, Israel, Palestine and Spain.

Résumé:
"City making 101" is a card game and reference resource for designers and “citizen designers” to imagine, discuss and share ways to realize livable, lovable and walkable cities. The game approach offers each player a dynamic pathway into the complexity of city making. Players gain a base of knowledge about city design and, through reading, reflection, and debate, use the cards to produce a customized design guideline per their priorities and aspirations. Framed under six categories, the 101 topics focus on fundamental domains of the public realm. Players imagine their ideal urban environment, debate issues on planning and public space, then build consensus on the design guidelines needed to realize their vision, taking into account best practice standards and performance parameters. The game opens up space for conversations, debates on priorities, stakeholder accountability and open-ended proposals on complex physical, social and economic issues.

Résumé:
With Common Space, activist and architect Stavros Stavrides calls for a reconceiving of public and private space in the modern age. Stavrides appeals for a new understanding of common space not only as something that can be governed and open to all, but as an essential aspect of our world that expresses, encourages, and exemplifies new forms of social relations and shared experiences. He shows how these spaces are created, through a fascinating global examination of social housing, self-built urban settlements, street peddlers, and public art and graffiti. The first book to explicitly tackle the notion of the city as commons, Common Space, offers an insightful study into the links between space and social relations, revealing the hidden emancipatory potential within our urban worlds.
