Once no more than gathering spots with domestic interiors, cafes and bars have evolved into places for relaxation where people go to escape the monotony of everyday life. Seen in this light, the design of a bar's interior is crucial: it's a setting that has to stir the senses, generate a great atmosphere and help create an unforgettable night out. The 40 innovative projects featured in "Behind Bars" are proof that more and more designers rely on high-tech solutions to produce a look geared to these demands. Their interiors not only demonstrate a high level of creativity and variety but also push the limits of style theme and materials. The result is one spectacular space after another. Each cafe or bar in the book is accompanied by quality images, floor plans and a full description based on an interview with each of the designers. "Behind Bars" is an inpsiring compilation of today's trends in bar design.

In this lucid and creative work, Sandoval-Strausz, an assistant professor of history at the University of New Mexico, situates the rise of hotels within the history of the triumph of capitalism and of an increasingly mobile society. Hotels, he says, facilitated mobility and the integration of frontier lands into larger networks of capital and commerce. Hotels were also part of the gradual process that dissociated people from particular places. If hotels solved some social problems, Sandoval-Strausz shows, they created others: guardians of domesticity, for example, worried about urban dwellers who chose to live full-time in hotels. In exploring the social and political meaning of hotels, the author pursues countless avenues, from menus to morals (Hotels were magnets for prostitution and other forms of illicit sex). There's a bit of labor history thrown in, too, since, in order to make good on the promise to be patrons' home away from home, hotels employed a huge number of workers, from cooks and launderers to janitors, Sandoval-Strausz also traces hotels' exclusion of Jews and blacks—the book ends with the 1964 Supreme Court case that desegregated public accommodations.

Résumé:
Elaborately conceived, grandly constructed insane asylumsranging in appearance from classical temples to Gothic castleswere once a common sight looming on the outskirts of American towns and cities. Many of these buildings were razed long ago, and those that remain stand as grim reminders of an often cruel system. For much of the nineteenth century, however, these asylums epitomized the widely held belief among doctors and social reformers that insanity was a curable disease and that environmentarchitecture in particularwas the most effective means of treatment. In The Architecture of Madness, Carla Yanni tells a compelling story of therapeutic design, from Americas earliest purposebuilt institutions for the insane to the asylum construction frenzy in the second half of the century. At the center of Yannis inquiry is Dr. Thomas Kirkbride, a Pennsylvania-born Quaker, who in the 1840s devised a novel way to house the mentally diseased that emphasized segregation by severity of illness, ease of treatment and surveillance, and ventilation. After the Civil War, American architects designed Kirkbride-plan hospitals across the country.

Résumé:
For millions of people the annual visit to a department store to view the festive window displays and visit Saint Nicholas in his winter wonderland is a treasured holiday tradition. But how did holiday traditions like this begin? Author William L. Bird, Jr. traces their evolution as holiday decorations moved from shop windows to building exteriors and out into the street in the form of parade floats. Packed with rarely seen photographs, Holidays on Display makes it easy to see why we have such lasting emotional attachments to animated Christmas windows, passing parades, and the ambient glow of holiday lights.
